We have always had one dog in the past, but have fallen in love with a rescue who needs to be rehomed with another dog in his life. So we are now considering rehoming two saluki x's that have been tested to see how well they get on.

Obviously 2 dogs will be more expensive than one, but I can't really see that 2 will involve any more work. If you are walking one, you can easily walk two!!

Do most of you have 2 dogs rather than 1?

I personally don't find it much more work having two. Especially if they are roughly the same age, size and fitness level. I have two, have had as many as three at a time.

I have 3 and I know several people on here have more than that. More than 1 dog means they have company when you are out and they don't take any more time to look after although obviously cost more.
As long as they get on with each other and you have the space go for it!!

After my mother gave up showing, we were always a one-dog family until last year, it is great fun although I wouldn't take a brother/sister combination again, they wind each other up something shocking.

I'd have a houseful but I think that would be vetoed......

I have two and think that having two gives them company for each other. I'm actually on the look for a third.
As you say it is no more work to walk two than one. yes it is more expensive to feed and I suppose you have a higher chance of more vets fees possibly.

I think 2 is possibly easier than 1 in a way, they are company for each other, they play with each other, mine tend to go further on walks as they run along together.
However, of course, it is also easier for 2 dogs to pick up on each others naughty habits!
We have 6

I prefer having more than one dog (I have 3), however it is as with everything, things both for and against. Usually the walking doesn't take more time because you have more than one dog but if one becomes a convalescent you might have to take one short walk with that dog and the usual long walk with the other (or do what I did, bring a pram where the convalescent can lie and rest between very short periods of being allowed down to sniff around a little). Two dogs to groom, check teeth on etc. does take a little more time than one but unless we're talking big coats, we're not talking much difference in time.

To me what really matters is that you think through if you can afford more than one dog and if you have room for more than one dog. The breed/breeds also matters, it is a clear difference between considering to have two Border Collies that needs some sort of work and two Greyhounds that is happy to mostly sleep as soon as they come home.

About the forum users, I've just thought that we with more than one dog simply have more dogs that we can talk about.

2 or 3 is a perfect number as they are such good company for each other, no more work but obviously more expensive. I have 5 and I wouldn't recommend it!

I had just one dog for 8 years and thought it was fine...... but since getting a puppy in feb I would now say that two is better.

They keep each other company when i am not here and play beautifully with each other, keeping each other fit

So long as they get on well, I would say two...... but if they dont like each other, then one would be fine!!!
