my foal has recently had to have his ear removed and i would like to hear from anybody who has any experiance with a one eared horse and how it effects their day to day life

No experience but two things spring to mind for the future
1 - insects and hayseeds getting into the open ear
2 - bridle slipping off.
Maybe a fly mask with ears to prevent the first from happening and a western one ear bridle for the second?

I knew of a racehorse with a split ear, (was at a yard I worked at) all the way down so one bit was floppy - came over from ireland like it and all we did was cotton wool for field (some times came out when he rolled) couldnt race with it in though then. He didnt mind what so ever.
Lucky foal is young so will learn to live with it hopefully poor chap!

poor lad. i'd make sure he has a shelter so he doesn't have to put up with rain getting in it! other than that i think he'll cope... one-eyed horses cope and that's a lot more drastic imho.
best of luck to him, poor little lad.

my foal lost his ear as he was attacked by a dog. my vets tried hard to save the ear but had to remove it after a week as it was dead and was goin to cause problems. they are hoping to skin graft it soon but are very unsure as they have never come across it before. i will put pictures up before and after the graft when its done or you should be able to see them in thehorse and hound if they decide to runthe story. i will take this opourtunity to thank you all for your replies

Poor foal and poor you, must have been very traumatic

. No advice I'm afraid but would be really interested to see the before and after skin graft pics. Good luck, hope all goes well for him.
