On Saturday we moved our horses to the winter field where there is quite abit of grass, not really lush grass but more than they were on. That evening i brought Bella my yearling in and her near hind fetlock was quite swollen, she was not lame there wasn't really any heat and i could not find any cuts or scabs.
I cold hosed it and put her to bed. Next morning it was still obviously filled from standing in, put her out in the hope that the swelling would go down as she is moving. Brought her in for tea p.m and it hadn't really gone down so turned back out as thought she would be better off, still no heat, lameness. Brought in again this evening and still not really any difference. So what could this be? It's not just slightly swollen, it's really quite big, but no lameness or heat really, could it be connected with the grazing?

my horse had the same swelling in the same place last night. im not sure what it is either, but put it down to him probably having pulled it in the field as its quite muddy just now. wil see how it is tonight

wil be interested to hear replies to your post

the leg was still rather large this morning so called the vet. He thinks it may be a low grade infection but isn't entirely sure so has given her a shot of anti-inflam and anitbiotics and she also has antibiotic powder for 4 days so whatever she has done or any infection she has will be treated.

Check for scabs under her fetlock/pastern area- I think it may be mud fever starting. It was just one filled leg with our mare at first....... in all four now and vet failed to pick it up even though I mentioned the scabs.

hi this sounds just how my foal William was brought him in a swelling on his leg and turned him out hoping it would go down it didn't next day same no lameness at all and on the later that afternoon or the next day it was swollen even more and the vet couldn't understand it with no heat lameness or cuts or anything so he put a needle into his joint to see if anything came and out and he has an infection in his joint and has now had an op and is hopefully on the mend but hes not out of the woods yet...

i would get it checked if i was you

how it turns out ok

It is now slowly on it's way down, still slight swelling by what the vet gave her seems to be working, but will continue to keep an eye on it untill i'm happy it's gone completely.
