Sort of related to CT's post :) Islay will be 10 in July, now that is not 'old' in my eyes in any way but I have noticed she is starting to slow down on her walks now. Quite often I find myself waiting for her to catch up with us.

How did you/do you go about splitting walks so the oldies get what they need but the younger ones get more? Islay will go mad if I try and leave her at home while I walk the others, but it might be getting to the stage where a gentler walk would be better for her.

My others are Flick (6), Hoover (6 1/2) and Amy (approx 5) - when I had my previous oldies I only had 2 dogs, so it was not a problem :o

Just get on with it. Mine are now used to one going out without the other and don't make any fuss, although at the begin threw a massive temper tantrum.

I've got 3 dogs, Millie who is 10, Gizmo an 8 year old with a bad heart and Maggie who is a 3 years old. Gizmo can't manage the longer walks any more. So I take the other 2 out for a long walk first thing and leave him in, on his own. Then take all 3 of them out for 2 short walks. That keeps everyone happy.

I take the younger 3 out first and then the older one gets a shorter walk. She does come out with the others most day but two to three times a week she has an easier day. She's 8 and a dobie and although shows no sign of slowing down, I worry about her joints etc.

I have 3 dogs, 2, 6 and 15. The 15 year old gets a gentle walk at her pace twice a day. The other 2 get good long walks twice a day. It works well, no problems.

nearly 6yrs, 12yrs and 14yrs, the 14yr old has slightly slower days, but most days he comes out for and hr the youngster one gets more than the othe 2 in the way of excersize

Two younger ones run around like loons trying to climb trees after squirrels.
Bracken whose rising 15 just ambles along at her own pace. I take them in the woods though so they're not restricted as they would be if on leads.

My parents 15yo dog comes on the main dog walk with the 'pack' most days, but he spends lots of time sleeping ATM, so more often now they're leaving him asleep and just giving him shorter walks, he doesn't notice! He enjoys the flatter walks, but we have to keep an eye on him and let him catch up, if he misses a path we've taken he goes the wrong way these days as his sight/hearing isn't what it used to be :o

Thanks for the replies :) I think I will carry on as I am for the time being, then if I think Islay really can't cope then she will have to stay at home for the 'long' walk - I will have to bribe her with sleeping on my bed while I am out :p - and she can come along for a shorter walk separately each day :)

Have 5 dogs. 20, 17, 9, 6, and 2. When walking on lead I take the 6 and 2 year old, along with one or 2 oldie, then come back and take another oldie! So the younger ones get big long walks while the older ones have shorter. The youngsters get to go both walks IYSWIM? :)

Lol. She was found on the road. We registered her with the vet 19 years ago - so she may be older! She still does round 1 of our walk, albeit a bit slow. But is great for the young ones, is grand going out twice!

When one less walks, they have that or go on the lead. If one is injured, he stays at home, tough luck. When Brig's arthritis seemed painful, he was on lead or the longline so he couldn't dash round as usual.

Buster goes out first thing, he's not old (7yo) but has arthritis and if he tries to keep up with the other two for more than an hour or so he is very sore next day.

The other two tend to get all day walkies on my day off ( weather dependant).
