Ever have one of those days when you wonder why you bother with horses???

Went up for my lesson this morning to find my horsey turned out in the field... with her stable rug on

YOs husband was on auto-pilot this morning and hadn't noticed the IN sign on her door, or the rug.

Thankfully she hadn't rolled, and I trudged through the swamp to the horses, who all then galloped past me back up the field.
I got a reluctant Megan in eventually and got ready for my lesson, and wish I hadn't bothered!

She was backward, nappy, ignoring my leg, and squealing when made to canter, so in the end we gave up trying to work her properly, and sent her galloping round the school... just like this time last year

I know half the problem is me, as I'm sub-consciously putting her handbrake on as soon as she starts taking me forward. RI even commented on my white face when she started Meg off galloping

It's silly as I know Meg won't bolt or buck, or do anything like my old (and crazy) horses used to throw at me as it's far too much effort for her, but I still don't seem able to trust her 100%.

Feel free to give me a kick up my backside to help me get over my mental block

My mare used to be like that in the winter and when I had a lesson in the school she spent so much time shying at a marker or one corner of the school sometimes I just had to keep circling at canter until she gave up and then she would concentrate and do some really nice stuff. I think sometimes the best thing to do is not to keep trying to get a result until they have got rid of their gremlins and if that means just trotting or cantering for twenty minutes then so be it.

Sometimes I would be very apprehensive about her in the winter, she was no pussy cat and I learnt to have extremely grippy knees and very quick reactions! but we got there in the end. We all need a kick up the backside occasionally, just hang on in there!

How are you out hacking? I found that letting go out on a hack has helped some of my mental blocks because I was so busy enjoying myself with friends that I forgot to be worried about the speed

Thanks! We're giving up with the front end this week, and just concentrating on getting her to react to my leg, so hopefully we'll be improving soon...

We're fine out hacking - in that we're slow away from home, and speedy back home! But I'll happily gallop, probably because I know she'll run out of room, or stamina before I do. She enjoys hacks as well, but doesn't like work, so I'm fighting straight away! Unfortunately I go on the fastest hacks from my yard, so there isn't really anyone to ride out with and practise pushing on.
