Riding my friends lovely mare. In the buckle mooching around the woods calm as you like then….
Boom she saw or smelled something and started to tense up started passage-ing and generally losing it. Unfortunately I don’t have much experience dealing with her and am only riding her while the other horse is in box rest. My friend and I swap half way round and usually this works well. Anyway as the spookiness started we arrived at the point at which we swap over. So I jumped off. The mare then got much worse and her behaviour escalated. Took quite a while to get things under control. I hope if I have to deal with it again I’ll cope better. Horses eh?

I find with this kind of behaviour, I kick it up a gear and trot, keep it going till she settles. Then she should come back down. Its what usually works for me 😊 it takes her mind off it and back into you.
Yes I think that would have helped. Holding on to her was accelerating her anxiety. Problem was once I’d jumped off I couldn’t get back on.
