Slightly dubious start to 2012 for CS and I..............we went out a couple of weeks ago but my back was off, so off in fact i should have retired before i started but we crawled round, and i mean crawled.......i couldnt sit, so he kept slowing down to *catch* me and it probably took about 20mins to do each test! d'oh..........so scores awful, as everything so dinky teeny tiny steps so as not to jar me.

Today, back was fine and pony on form but everything else was a farce ..............toddled off to do AM92 and A100 and he warmed up super chilled, lovely and relaxed but taking me forward from word go, thought we were on for a nice clear round at at least and then just as we were walking up the (very narrow) path to the arena, the previous competitors horse spooked and came leaping towards us, rider didnt try and pull up, or calm him down, instead started to eff, blind, kick, shout and generally make the situation 100% times worse..............so early in the season this was too much for CS he tried to spin round and dive back into the warm up, NMT managed to lead himpast (she also had to go wading and lead the total poof through every microscopic puddle en route to warm up/lorry and back again!!!!!!!)..............he was now totally unsettled, upset, and generally keeping half and eye and ear on the path of doom so test was blown before it started really, had to ride the entire thing off my seat, lateral work changes the lot, and we had a lot of opening rein and guiding him round tactfully! put my hand up before the end and retired.

Went back to warm up as only 25mins before A100 and calmed him down, loads of stretching and patting. Put tailcoat on (pweeety!!!) and picked him up, did everything beautifully and softly incl the 4's...........NMT donned her fearless leader hat again and led him to arena only to have the same rider come passaging and kicking up the path behind me, intending to warm up in the (now empty) arena next to me. I think my desperate face and small yelp told her all she needed to know, and she didnt in the end, but again, too little too late and CS frayed nerves now went completely.

We did a very loose interpretation of A100 complete with about 35 1's on the spot, piaffe pirouettes and flat out bolting (ext canter), so again put hand up before the end. In some ways am pleased as he didnt completely lose it, and being sharp and that way inclined, he could well have totally given me the finger. I got the feeling he was desperately trying to hold it together but just couldnt quite :( the nice bits were much improved, all the lateral work felt looser, easier, more supple, and the changes at the judges end were nice, just such a shame that anything at the top end of the arena resembled a space hopper on LSD.

Am frustrated at the circumstances, but cant really fault the pony, second outing, spooky venue, and unsettling goings on. He felt fab fun to ride in the warm up and really makes me grin, he got a splattering of 7's, which sadly couldnt even out the 0's,1's and 2's for our more freestyle moments!!!! He went to his favourite mcdonalds on the way home (think CS has been to every mcdonalds in the east mids by now!), and said hi to all the late night chavs, and is now tucked up in his PJ's with his tea.

Overall, very pleased - when he's listening it all feels much more uphill and established. Onwards and upwards, vale view next weekend which should be safe enough (!), for AM85 and AM92 (i think...)

I must apologise for giggling at you description of your previous outing - had a wonderful mental image of CS tip-toeing round! On the brightside - he looked after you and didnt take advantage. :)

What a shame and how annoying about today!
He looks great in the warm-up though (love the 4th photo - talk about power!) and sounds like he was going really well too. But if he can pull off a few 7's when on the edge of exploding he'll be phenomenal when relaxed!

Looking forward to hearing about your next outing.

Well done for thinking of him and trying to boost his confidence, some of the photos are great, loving the tails! I think you're right to keep taking him out and hopefully he will realise that he can't control everything around him, and that if you're asking him to do something then it's ok, he's safe.

It's soul destroying when days like this happen but sounds like he coped better than this time last year so well done.
As for the other competitor some people never cease to amaze me, you might forgive them if it was prelim classes but riding at AM they should know better!

i know you cant spend your entire time trying to keep everyone else happy but rider in question was well aware he was on the edge of exploding as id just told her so in warm up (she asked how he went in AM92 and i politely explained he was upset by the shouting/kicking so was now feeling like an unexploded bomb, i did say she wasnt to know he would be upset by the shouting but that the narrow path had made it a bit of a pressure cooker situation, i tried to be as polite as i could-i wouldnt ever give one of mine a *******ing if i thought i might squish some poor other bugger, esp not as they were just on way in to arena!!!!!!!).
rider has actually competed to GP so yes you would think she would know better!!!!

and yes, at the start of the 2011 season if that had happened it hink he'd have been on his back legs running blindly around in total flat out panic and like TE says the more he does the more he will hopefully learn to trust that when i say its ok, it really is ok! so i guess another positive is that it was good learning experience for him :)

and he looks like a very smart little seahorse!

its all comming together sweetly at home, we can do 5 x 2's on a good counting day (me not him lol!) and the piaffe is starting to get there, he finds the idea of that very hard and we've had to come at it from a diff angle to how id usually do it (bringing the passage back instead of the walk forward) but the penny is starting to drop

I can't believe how much bigger and stronger he looks everytime you post photos! Not that he always uses that to your advantage :D Can't believe someone would behave like that at a dressage comp of all places :(

Can i ask what is your hat, cant quite see the name, is it a las?

urgh how frustrating! I HATE it when people are downright ignorant. Sorry to hear that.

Still, sounds like he coped better than he has in the past?

And as always, he looks lush! :) love the test pic with his ears pricked, such a pretty boy :)

Well done for copeing with it. I do feel for you, having got him soft and someone else's actions making him freak. Not fair.

Still, onwards and upwards x

Arrrrrgh how frustrating, I know how tricky it is trying to find 'racehorse friendly' situations. Yesterday xc schooling we had a lovely lady turn up to school and she went into the arena as we came out and then went into the back paddock to jump xc as we were in the front paddock as she knew we were on babies, see? some people are lovely and considerate......some....aren't :(

He looks mega though, and I love the tails, think I would also wear those round the house, and enjoy swishing about :)

Poor CS, at least he held it together as best he could. He looks super smart in the pics as usual. Its very early in the season, stick with it!! :D

As for the lady you mentioned, I do think its very rude when people have no consideration of others. Sadly, it seems to be all too common to mow down fellow competitors in the warm up or treat the horse badly if its not going well that it completely upsets the others that are trying to perform at their best. Very unfair to sort out schooling issues on someone else's time and money! We've all had it go pear shaped at a show (I know that I have) and its easy to forget that anyone else is even there, let alone trying to ride and compete. However, she obviously knew that she had upset you otherwise she would have carried on a second time around!

Definitely one of those days to chalk down to experience. Which venue were you at by the way? :D

argh...how irritating. the last time i went showjumping there was a lunatic woman in the working in who was shrieking and shouting and it wound V right up- i ended up coming out and not even jumping the oxer...some people are just nobs...i often think its because they aren't sat on anything sharp and so they forget/ don't know how terrifying it can be when something sharp flips its lid!
still, sounds like there were a lot of positives- if he can get 7s when he's stressed just think what he'll be like when he's relaxed! :)

Sounds very frustrating!! At least he held it together and you didn't end up on the ground, something that is always a plus!
He looks so much stronger in the photos and much more built up behind the saddle :)

Such a shame that happened, but I love the way you are looking at all the positives. He is a super horse and does not look easy I think you are doing a great job with him.

Such a shame that your outing hasn't gone to plan but all credit to you for seeing the positives. It would be all too easy to feel disheartened.

The pictures show how well he is working though, lovely and uphill and soft.

He has become so much stronger over winter .

What a shame that another competitior ruined your hard work in the warm up  but at least he managed to keep it together enough for you to stay on him. Good luck for your next outing :).

What a shame it didn't go all to plan. He looks amazing and you are both truely inspirational. I've forwarded some of your threads to a non-HHO friend of mine who is struggling with her ex-racer and I shall definately be forwarding this one. He had a total melt down at a competition the other week and coming stone last with a very disappointing score, having finished 2011 on a high by not actually coming last!
Am looking forward to seeing more reports, onwards and upwards.

What a shame! Don't be too disheartened though, these things are sent to test us! On the positive side CS coped a lot better than he would have done a year ago so onwards and upwards (but not literally!).

To join the bandwagon of misery: I had once boxed to a rented arena as we did not have one at home to find the people using it before me had parked their trailer right next to the long side - no fence on the arena. Fair enough although odd as the parking was massive and empty. They then had A LOT of trouble loading their horse, including shouting, lunge lines, rearing on the ramp, etc. but never moved the trailer. They finished off by letting the horse go, which galloped off into the distance...that one just about did R's head in and we left before them!

It's a real shame that some people are not more aware of what chaos they can cause by their thoughtless actions :( I'm glad he managed to contain himself to some degree. It just shows the great relationship you have and how much he trusts his mum. Well done Star!! and PS of course :)
