Am hopefully taking H on a sponsored ride in a couple of weeks which he really enjoys but need some bitting advice!

Last year he got so strong- he just lowered his head and just lent on the bit and was doing his utmost to bog off- this was in a 3 ring gag with reins on main and bottom holes. He is usually fine in a 3 ring on the first or second ring out hacking or sometimes even a snaffle if its a slow hack but he finds sponsored rides hugely exciting (think he used to hunt so maybe he thinks he's back doing that!)

He's been very lazy lately but he only does one sponsored ride a year (wont travel!) plus this year I'm going with YO and she is taking a couple of clients from the riding school so dont want him bogging off and setting them off (am potentially going to take someone else who has similarly nappy horse that I can go on ahead with if needed)

Just wondering what to look at hiring as would rather have something stronger than yank on something less strong.

If you're pretty competent, and have good independent hands, a German hackamore might do the trick. I like them a lot for horses that bear down and tank. They do affect your steering a bit though!
Cheltenham gag is designed for leaners. I'm not awfully keen on them, but there's no denying that they do a good job of keeping the head up!
