Yes I know it is really 'how long is a piece of string' - but roughly

Or I shall have to buy one of those spring balance things

Bob (15.2hh TB) is getting 4 sections of nice quality hay a night and is still eating his straw bedding

I know it probably wont do him any harm, but I am wondering if I should be giving him even more hay?

So that is 4 sections in total - hmmmm

Is he greedy? Or just eating it quickly and then wondering what to do with himself? I can start giving him it later when I move there at the end of the month though

Get a spring balance and a big blue IKEA bag (wonderful things). Really the only way to be sure is to weigh it, hun. I've had bales weighing anything from 30kg to 42kg.

Based on ester's hay weight, Bob is getting 12lbs of hay at night (I'll have to go kilos, don't do llbs) which is 5.5kg. I would say mine get at least 7kg, maybe more, which is at least 15lbs so perhaps another slice?

ETS - I hard feed at 8pm with a little hay and they get the rest at 10pm

I fear you are right and I will have to get a spring balance ChicoMio - perhaps someone at the yard will have one I can borrow as I am terminally skint as usual

He goes through a bale every 3 nights...but at the last yard he only used to have one section of big bale haylage every night, and used to leave loads of it

(ester thinks thats what it is!)

Well as one of ours is a 14.2 native, other is a 15.1 anglo I think he could have more if he is eating it all, I would up to 6 slices in batches if poss.

Okey dokey I will give more from tomorrow, thanks for the feedback everyone

Any ideas why he eats all his hay and never ate the haylage as a matter of interest

It was really good quality haylage, nutritionally great, smelt lovely etc

They are just a pain in the bum. I have a roundbale of what seems to be wonderful hay - fragrant, green, dry, like summer in a bale at 15€ a pop. They hate it and prefer the scratty late baled tough old stuff we are given for free as field fodder

You probably find Bob likes this stuff better!

how do you get them to eat it???? my 17 hnd warmblood has one large slice and thats it. I tried giving him 3-4 slices and he just leaves it and the hay is fine, it is almost like he is full. even if he is late out in the morning. I decided to not waste it if he wont eat it and just give one large slice. was the same with Haylage.

No idea why he eats so much now scribble, as I said Bob was just like your warmblood at my last yard and wouldnt eat much at all

In fact if he had to be in 24/7 for any reason it would worry me that he wasnt getting enough roughage, even though he had plenty of nice haylage available

They just aim to confuse us I think

I'm not sure.... but Ron (16.2 IDx) will eat a whole half bale per night (coming in 7pm and going out 7 am) in the middle of winter.

Tom (16h welsh x hannoverian) will eat 3 slices in the same time. the rest he puts in his bed and poo's on.

but then he's a fruit loop who throws things at the farrier!

Oh my goodness! Star ate seven small slices last night. There were just a few scraps left this morning, so I put eight in tonight!

Gastric Ulcers. Paranoid.Moi.Never!

We must have heavy hay! 3 sections is 12lbs! Baileys and Joe currently on 9lb but they are on good grass during the day, Baileys leaves some but Joe the hoover finishes every last scrap! Neither of them are exactly slim at the moment! In the winter they both get 12lb, Joe is a similar size to Bob but native and "big boned"!

An interesting post as I dont think it would matter how many slices I put in with my mare, she would still eat the lot. I have battled with her weight since last winter and she is now looking fab, I struggle with knowing how much to give her.

Mine are REALLY picky, if they don't like it they will not eat it at all, no matter if they get nothing else or not (they are on shavings!) It really does come down to finding something they actually like. I have 2 suppliers mine eat quite happily for hay, one barn dried green lovely smelling stuff, the other normal looking very yellow hard stuff, they hate the hay with lots of "fluff" in (whatever type of grass that is!) but currently go through 6 bales a week beteen 2 of them (16 handers)

re the weighing splotchy, weigh it once if you can borrow one, I then fill my nets in a dustbin so it is exactly the same amount in each net despite varying sizes (also means we all give them the same amount whether it is me mum or groom!)

One winter my show cob (15.1hh) ate 5 bales of hay a week - good big bales too. He was turned out 7am - 2pm but there wasn't really any grass to speak of. He was RAVENOUS when he came in!
YM wouldn't let us put hay out for them...needless to say we left!

Just a little update in case anyone is interested - I bought a spring balance today (they are only a fiver, I hadnt realised that

) and weighed 4 sections of my latest bale - 18lbs

He can have that tonight and see how he does with it

He is in from 6pm to 8.30am though, so a good long time
