Basically as the title says - can I get a one-stage vetting done, or does it have to be a two-stage at least? If so, what's the price of a one-stage?

You are unlikely to find a vet willing to do just stage one and I do not really see why you would not want a 2 stage, apart from listening to the heart most of the first stage can be done by an experienced person, it is the second stage of assessing soundness of limb/ action with flexion tests that is more important.
Costs will vary but a 2 stage will be from about £100 upwards depending on area, travel time etc. I would think you would pay almost the same for just a one stage as the travel and time consuming paperwork would still be almost the same as a 2 stage.

Quite honestly - to reduce the price, haha. I'm looking at buying a little cob mare, 12 going on 3, very cheaply but want to make sure she won't pass out and die on me the next morning. Is it worth just getting an experienced horseman to have a look at her?

IMO the only people who should scrimp on the vetting are the rich get at least a two stage.

You can speak to the vet you want to use and just get them to do a general check.
Eyes, heart, lungs and a trot up.

If you want to reduce the cost...ask yourself should you be buying a horse in the first place!!
What would you do if you suddenly had a massive vets bill, let alone the everyday costs of keeping a horse.
Ring your vets and ask them for a rough price of common injuries and illnesses.....you will be shocked. The cost of antibiotics alone is astronomical and a relatively innocent looking cut on a leg can quickly turn into a serious cellulitis and cost you in excess of £1,200 (I know from experience)
Buying a horse is the easy part.....paying everyday costs isn't!!

Also forgot to say that in my area, just to get a carcass taken away is £240 (that's if they die naturally) if you have to pay to have PTS as well the price can rocket.
Too many people do not put money aside for this and this is one thing that one day all horse owners will definitely have to deal with.
I don't mean to sound harsh but I know too many people who are trying to cut costs and it just doesn't work......make sure you have enough money to keep a horse and dispose of it one day too!!
