Hello, I'll try to keep this short.
Some of you may remember that I admited my horse to have a performance work up at my local vets. (Note : not my usual vets but the only local one to offer this work-up). I was originally concerned with his lack of ability to engage his quarters, he humps his back / does very small bucks if really asked to move forwards, his canter is POOR with no engagement and he more often than not is disunited. He equally is very on the forehand and generally just seeming to lack any real gusto, which considering his history and breeding - something just doesnt add up! I was concerned with his back - thinking KS or SI.
On unloading at the clinic , he was instantly written off as being neurological with Grade 2 ataxia. He had the standard neuro tests which they felt that he was very poor on - and so he was the taken for x-rays, which came back clear. He was then admitted for a bone scan, of which there were no compressions but there was 'irregular uptake to both sacroilliac joints.' This was ignored, and he stayed down there for a further 4 days to have a tail biopsy to which it again came back clear.
He then was sent off for 6 weeks on steroids and had a re-exam. He was by no means significantly improved in this time, but definitely a marked improvement. After the 6 weeks however they said whilst there was improvement, there was still neuro issues and with an exaggerated HL action in trot. Given 6 weeks now just to do nothing and 'see what happens.'
After this I was a bit disappointed - and so sought a second opinion with the head vet at ''my'' vets. He said there was no way he was neurological, just perhaps a bit green and with muscle wastage behind - and so we bute trialled and 'cracked on.' This was 5 weeks ago and again, he was better on the bute but not anything majorly to write home about.
Finally, he has since moved yards to an area with lots of hill work and no school. I hired a school recently and he was back to being very backward etc and has since struggled with walking down hills. He has regularly been seen by chiro's/saddlers and is otherwise deemed 'fine.'
I just feel that some sort of issue with his sacroiliac is staring me in the face!!
I am going to ring ''my'' vet and seek to taking him down to their practise today, but I just wondered whether there is anyone else out there who had issues with a similar diagnosis?!
I tried.
