Only 40% vaccinated against flu

Who are you suggesting is making the money, the pharma or the vets? I'm thinking the vets from your post as they are the ones going against the guidelines but don't want to assume. I was more meaning pharma who many seem to think are the devil incarnate even if they are alive because of them :p.

Frank's feet always show up his vaccination but they get over it and carry on. Friend's got lami post vaccination this year but that was because he had undiagnosed PPID.

I mean the vets, but actually I suppose its both, but the vets are the ones ignoring the guidelines. Having the puppy has been an education in just how much needless stuff is pushed on you. I know they have to make a living and I personally dont think they charge enough, although I dont want them to charge more  But the constant hard sell of vaccines, flea treatments, health care plans etc, etc is exhausting! I will say, I dont get that with the horse and its out of the vets hands anyway really as the horse needs up to date vaccines to be allowed on some livery yards and to certain shows etc, so what can you do other than go along with it?

yes it does seem to be more of a small animal problem? I wonder if that is in part because if you know absolutely nothing you are less likely to end up with a horse than you are a puppy/kitten etc so they are more inclined towards hand holding and having every based covered? Just a pondering. Also a lot more competition for small animal work so they are trying to get you for life with the health care plans etc, just marketing really ;).

Yes with horses it is a bit of thems is the rules really, but stuff seems not to stick if it doesn't work/causes too many issues, it wasn't that long ago that the strangles vaccine was being hailed but that seems to have mostly gone quiet now- I've not heard of anyone using it for a while compared to when it first came out.

I must admit that I vaccinate yearly largely because it is required for shows, venues and travel. The one who has retired this year will not be leaving the property again and will not be vaccinated. However, has anyone had a horse with either tetanus or equine flu? I have had both (tet horse died), and I would far rather risk a few side effects than have to nurse another gravely ill horse.

My horses dont go anywhere so are only vaccinated against Tet. This was on advice from the vet. I dont have an annual Flu vaccine myself (although had one this year due to pregnancy) and as someone said the strains are forever changing. I will probably get my horses done as they get older, as people do in the human population however as they are young and fit i doubt a nasty case of flu would kill them!

two of mine are vaccinated for both and one for tetanus only. One of the vaccinated ones got flu two years ago so im not convinced about the efficiency of the vaccine but the two that are done are from world horse welfare so have to be otherwise I would just do tetanus.

years ago I lived close to a livery where the owner also bred and trained showjumpers. His policy was to only vaccinate his horses when they were ready to show. Then there was the flu outbreak. He lost 12 foals/youngstock but because of the virus burden that the young horses provided a livery horse also died even though vaccinated. Almost every horse became sick ( horses on the property of which% unvaccinated
A vaccine not only works for the horse that is vaccinated, but also protects the ones with immune problems. It makes sure the virus load cannot become too big (as it can in unvaccinated horses which makes it impossible also for vaccinated horses to fight the heavy virus load

Having said that, I bough an ID in Ireland and when it arrived here with the passport...no vaccinations in it! but there was a health cert. for the transport, couldn't believe it.

Vaccinate every year, although one jab is only every other year but I pay so little attention without looking I don't know which :D

I'm the same with mini SFs vaccinations tbh, and I'll be paying for her to have the meningitis one (she's older than the cut off) the nasal flu one, and as I'm pregnant I'm having the flu one too.

Always love the anti-vacc brigade!

Mine are vaccinated. They have ended up moving around quite a bit for my work so I think it's safest to keep them up to date with flu as well, even though they barely ever leave their field. I'd rather be safe than sorry, tbh. Neither has ever had any side effects from their vaccination.

I have been refused additional jabs twice on the grounds that they now know that 5 gives lifetime immunity

They also know through trials that levels for horses are still good at five years, and some vet practices recommend tet every three years, which is what my tinies will be getting.

Bit of a dodgy doctor i would have said. My mum sliced her thumb open on a can once and got given a booster to be safe. I would rather get a vaccination than get the disease there is after all a reason for why we have the vaccinations.

I saw one mother over in America I think who refused to vaccinate her children because it wouldn't help them. She changed her tune once all 3 became ill. Imagine all of your children dying just because you wouldn't let them have a vaccination? It may be pointless to some but my horse will continue to get them. I won't see him get ill with something I could have prevented. He also gets so many injuries a yearly tetanus is pretty much required.
