...would keep a horse once it can no longer be ridden, produce foals or be a companion to something worthwhile.
After all, you wouldn't keep a car if it was no longer running or economic to repair.
And only a fool pays more in vet bills than the value of a new horse.

Ooooh bother, I'm an idiot who owns an ancient motorbike that's not currently on the road, an elderly Golf that's not currently on the road as well as a decaying Ford Transit horsebox that is unlikely to be able to made road legal. As for the horses, I have a Section A that is just slightly too small for me, a retired Section D thats no use to man nor beast apart from being a source of danger, frustration and loads of love and cuddles, a 16.1 Warmblood that I can't ride out by himself, and a TB mare that's too small for me to ride.

Yup, I'm in idiots'r'us.

Oh dear - I feel a row coming on. I hope that was not the purpose of this post as such an emotive subject discussion can only end one way...

Surely the answer depends on so many different circumstances it will never be really be settled upon.

But in any case, whichever way you feel, calling a loving, caring owner with their own land and substantial financial backing an idiot is not really very constructive is it. Even if they don't have their own land and are as poor as church mice I don't believe they should be called idiots either.

Please - what is the definition of a troll again???? Ahh "Wikipedia: posting on an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into a desired emotional response" ... maybe or just maybe the "idiot" is poking in the wrong direction.

It is easy to see (for those who have seen similar treads by shils in the past) that this is a joke, intended to give a lot of people laughs when other members of the forum become incensed and reply seriously.

But it does lead me to wonder whether or not there would have been a different response if someone who nobody knew/only had a few posts/whose name was infamous had posted it...

Personally I don't have a horse, but if I did and it broke, I would probably be the "idiot" that nurtured it even if there was no chance of it having a useful puropse again ;) Although to me maybe it's purpose would be simply something for me to focus my resources and emotions on! :)

Well, for what it's worth, that is all true and we all know it. But a horse isn't a car, it's part of your family and you love them.
