Only in america!!

I just think that in the uk we are incredibly lucky that we take safety so seriously. Yes it might be a pain in the rear end at an event when you have to show your hat and body protector are up to standard or even invest in new ones at cost, or ride in safety stirrups ect.
In fact dont the pony club mention that you dont even wear earings or was that back in the day???
 
I can only wonder at the mentality of a parent who puts their own ego at watching their child compete above the safety of that child. Talk about failure to protect..... I don't care where in the world it happened, it should not have done. At least at those other American parent ego boosting freak shows the "child beauty pagent" the child is not at physical risk although I do worry about emotional and psychological damage.
 
in the vid a tot no older than say 5/6 is on a horse that spills at the barrel and goes down on child. If you look closely you can see that she is tied into the stirrups. When horse gets upright child is left hanging limp and almost 'dead' like. She has no form of protection what so ever. thats what is disturbing.

Have to say though I have never heard of anything like that before and dare I say it was as uncommon as a unicorn being ridden in the same show
 
I can't comment on the mentality of qh's, I've only met one and he was a right arse but I presume he wasn't a good representation of most of the qh breed. ponies aren't all crazy by any stretch of the imagination, although I cannot speak for your ponies over there, and at least a child has a more proportional size to deal with, and its far less of a distance to fall.

Yeah.....we ALL clad our children in heavy makeup and put them on stage. Much like ALL your parents leave children alone when they go on holiday and they in turn get "abducted" and go missing

If you read the posts no one is suggesting that all parents do this, it is however likely to only happen in America as it is the only place we are aware of where children are involved in barrel racing.

Is the kids feet tied to stirrups or caught up (which I have seen happen in the UK) I thought you got the tied in stirrups from one of the comments on the YT vid
 
she was on a yard that I worked on many moons ago. aqha uk show horse, stunning to look at and a star in the arena, she knew when the spot light was on her I'll give her that but at home Dr Jekyll and Miss Hyde

ahhhhhhhhhhhh She was a QH in the UK? No wonder she was messed up.

Maybe she just wanted to be left outside 24/7 , unrugged and treated like a true American Quarter horse
 
The horse was great; I wouldn't mind one like that; his falling over was a bit of a freak accident, I think; and shocking though it seems, I suspect that little hatless kid on that big horse with her feet tied to the stirrups was actually a lot safer than a lot of British kids on wilful ponies, hacking down the road to get to a safe place to ride.

We let kids go hunter-trialling etc. and we KNOW that its a possibility that a horse will not just slip but roll over on top of them. Does that make us irresponsible?
