Took Reggie to the vets last week to restart his vaccinations and while giving him a quick health check, the vet observed that he only has one testicle - he's 4 years old - I assume if we have him castrated then they will need to explore to see if they can find the other one, anyone any experience of this in dogs? what did you do?
Cheers

My son's dog had this and they actually had him castrated as the vet said it wasn't good to leave the testicle inside is it could become malignant. They left it a while in case it dropped.

OK, thanks, I hope he doesn't mind me saying this on here ( I know he won't) but my husband had a testicle removed that hadn't descended when he was about 5, so I guess if we have Reggie castrated the one hiding will have to be found, but sounds like it may need to come out anyway

The undescended one has a higher risk (significant) for developing cancer due to being at the incorrect temperature for the cells. Often they are inguinal and it's not a big surgery but some are abdominal and need a full explore to find. Usually it's the right hand one missing. We recommend removal at 2yo as this is the age when problems tend to occur.

We got one of our boys fixed when he around two and a half years old. He had one that hadn't descended which the vet had to go looking for. He was a pretty sad lad afterward, but everything was fine and he recovered with no bother.

Previous Kelpie had a retained testicle. I think he was about 14 months when it was operated on to remove and castrate. It took quite a bit of searching to find the missing one so was a reasonably significant surgery in the end, but he recovered very quickly from it with no lasting issues.

Thanks for all your experiences, Reggie is already 4, we only took him on at the start of the year, the issue was found when he went to the vets to re-start his vaccinations, he's back in on the 2nd of feb. so I'll chat to the vet then, he does need to lose some weight, so my ideal would be to resolve that and give him a little more time to settle before operating, but I'll go with their advice
