OH (for those who don't know) has been riding about 4 years, having 4 lessons before going hunting the first time, and loves it. He loves it, especially galloping and jumping, he has no fear and after a few close calls for friends has chosen to use this all to the advantage of the air ambulance. Today OH had a lesson on Ron, without a saddle. This is all in preparation for doing a full day's hunting later in the season bareback in aid of the Air Ambulance.

Ron is feeling rather full of himself, so OH had actually had an hours hack first thing, given Ron 2 hours recovery time and then hacked the mile or so up to the lesson, and still had his hands full!

This was the first lesson bareback, and my instructor is donating 2 lessons, and putting the notice around her yard to help raise sponsorship.:)

She had him schooling on the flat to start with, to see how both were coping, and to get Ron listening (fat chance!). Then she popped up a few little fences and told him to approach them like you do out hunting... trot along, turn, pop, turn and trot (like following a fence line, crossing it and following it up the other side). She got him jumping a little (showjumping) gate, and a water tray etc.

After the lesson he hacked home, but Ron, still feeling full of himself, and now excited by having seen a jump, spooked at something/nothing and shot sideways up someone's driveway. OH stayed on, but bashed a part of himself on Ron's withers and is now walking like..... well, kinda like he's got wet pants on :D or has sh@t himsel' :o:eek:

Instructor, apart from thinking that OH is mad, said that she's never yet met anyone who looks more stable jumping a fence with no saddle, than on the flat with one...

Like I said - only the OH! :D

Good for him, just told my oh who has been riding 12 years and he says "is he mad??? Or stupid???" My OH thinks bareback or hunting is crazy, nevermind combining the two.

PS don't tell him I ride to the field bareback in a headcollar when no one is looking.

sorry to say but this has been done pics in the H&H planning now to do a full days hunt with just a neck strap sorry to p*** on his parade

Most charity things have been done before - so what - its still a great thing to do.

If I were to go hunting bareback I'd be more likely to end up in the air ambulance rather than raise money for it!

Best of luck to him. Not tempted to join in Jen??:p

i know but theres nothing like trying something original

..did someone annoy you today?! You seem to be very, very negative about this!

Her OH is trying to do something good for the benefit of others- who cares how he achieves it? Well done to him for taking the initiative and doing something awesome for a very good cause.

Wish him all the best and hope he recovers soon :p

OH PLEASE!!!!

Sitting in a bath of beans is old hat- I've never heard of anyone hunting bareback. Christ I stupidly forgot my saddle evening SJ'ing once and my mum made me do it bareback and THAT was bad enough (never forgot my saddle since though).

If you've got nothing nice to say then just zip it love!

Well done OP's OH fantastic!!! I'll donate to the Justgiving page when it's sorted

AGREE ^^

well done to him the air ambulance is as a fab cause :D and with his erm delicate manly bits will require more nerve than a woman doing it methinks!

Very few people have the nerve to hunt bareback (or a horse they could risk it on!) so its still a rare occurence showing courage for a brilliant charity and deserves support :) aside from the neckstrap only option (and be fair how many of us have horses we could hunt in just a neckstrap?!) whats our other option ...hunting facing backwards?!!! I for one will NOT be signing up for that as I would definetely be costing the air ambulance more than I would raise for them!:D Any man who puts his family jewels on the line for charity is a (rather crazy!) generous hero IMO regardless of originality.

If you can get an online giving page set up I, and Im sure others, would willingly contribute! :D

... and you would suggest what then? Who rattled your cage.

Jen, Good for him I hope he thoroughly enjoys himself and anything raised for the Air Ambulance is great.

Good on him. Having ridden my TB bareback for 10 mins in walk last week ( and I don't have dangly bits getting in the way) I think he's mad - but in a nice way  I'll donate as a brilliant cause and I'll send a bag of frozen peas to him for after. Which hunt is it and when ? 

Take your negativity elsewhere tinpot - it's not wanted here!

I hope it all goes well JenHunt and nothing gets squished or broken! Excellent charity to raise funds for - well done to your OH for having the (bruised) balls to do it!! :)

Good for him!!! Wish him all the best for what he's doing for a fabulous cause!! We're also doing a spot of fundraising for our local air ambulance this Saturday with a sponsored ride arranged by pony club (yes that's been done before too, but hay-ho, it gets them some much needed funds!!!!) xx
