What a truly terrifying, amazing, overwhelming emotional rollercoaster I have just been on during a hack on my breath-takingly bombproof boy this morning.

I ventured on a ride I have only done once before, in company. Crossing the main A road which is not a problem as we ride along it in both directions anyway, usually alone as noone else will brave it with us, & our 1st hurdle was the road closed signs which would have meant turning around on said main road so we continued forward, not sure how this would affect any insurance cover?

Figured road closure was old news as they are always being left after a flood and we invariably have to move/report them....wow. found out why the signs were there about 10 minutes later!!

Road being tarmaced therefore barriers, steaming tarmac, naked flames, loud very loud drilling, flashing lights, lots of hi vis, digging, conveyor belts carrying tarmac....need I go on?! It was to the left of the t junction and to the right. There was no way I was turning my boy back towards home up the hill that meets the main road....so on we went.

Wow wow wow whilst I nearly peed my pants, my boy just trundled along really relaxed! He was immersed in it both sides & I almost cried with pride.

We continued up and there was a 2nd lot of it all! Of course we were fine.

The worst bit was all the undesirables flocking around him swinging their shovels asking loads of questions about where I got him, how old was he, would I sell him etc etc, honestly, people u don't want asking about ur coloured (1 I recognised as he previously shouted at me from his car "if he was a mare? no, a gelding. um yes, & told me he was wasted with me as he should be driven) so I had to extend my ride to over double in length so as not to pass them again which would have given them chance to see where he lived.

Later on down another busy road, 2 women commented on how good he was & when I told them where we had just been, I trotted off leaving them open mouthed!!

Now before u shout at me that I shouldn't have continued, I have had my boy for nearly 6 years & he has never let me down hacking (I moan about his/our jumping!) & I know his every move before he does it but even for me today, this was extra special & worthy of a pointless but proud mummy post!

Thank u for reading this far, tea & toast for all...inc. me as it was snowing so I was very cold!

Yes Riderlizzie.....my horse is always the escort horse for new riders, young horses, days when they're shooting, road works, town centre rides, low flying schnooks. So yes one of the rare originals, bred & broken by travellers & lived by the M25 for 3 years so pretty unflappable BUT today I was scared but turning around would have been the worst thing to do...& he just didnt care!

I think being blinded by his forlock helps!

Navaho yes that is it hahaha.....

Can I ask that next time I moan about our cr×p jumping, I am reminded of my horses strengths & stop focussing on his weakness?

The training for Emdurance is underway!

He souns like a star, i have a youngster that is like that. They are worth their weight in gold :D. She came from the gypsies aswell.

Ashgrove, yes we have done a few trecs & usually he does very well but the last 1 in Dec was soooo strict. We did our 1st adult gymkhana too, he was incredible so we are doing our 2nd 1 in March. Thank u for ur nice words x

What a fab horse! Well done both of you!
I also have men stopping their vans to ask if they can buy my horse and tell me hes wasted with me and it drives me mad. I tell them hes 20 years old now (hes 9) as I nearly got followed all the way home once!

I love schnooks! They shall be added to my HHO vocab, like knob straps!!
Anyway, well done you and well done your boy!

Well done you must be really proud of him. My two had a helicopter land in their field and they stood and watched it. I wasn't on either of them at the time thank goodness but they were as good as gold. Now when a helicopter goes over they look up waiting for it to land. Bless them.:)

Brilliant! He sounds exactly like my coloured cob, who would've (and has) walked past no problem too.

Don't you just love a confident, happy horse? :)

Yippeeee to such a happy thread =happy posts. My OH however isn't so impressed, by me pursuing this ride however not my horse, I think OH might sneak him some treats next visit!

Dorito he nearly was a few months ago due to my failing health, I had a few people interested before I got as far as advertising & left a couple with broken hearts when I came to my senses (1 of whom is still looking for his 'twin' even now). I shudder at the thought now & HE is what makes me cope my failing health & I berate myself for forgetting that even briefly!

Now if only he could jump better......ok so he can without me on his back!!

He sounds a fantastic boy, well done for not letting him go as that would of been such a big mistake. This though is why buyers cannot pick up a horse as golden as him for a pittance, they are worth their weight in gold just like him.

Wow! My boy doesn't make any sense out hacking - the other day a string of multicoloured bunting was life-threateningly terrifying and we had to have a 5 minute panic attack until we could pass it.... Yet further up the road a huge bonfire right on the verge wasn't worth a second look?!

Definitely worth his weight in gold!

Our 1st horse had pulled a landau along Blackpool's Golden Mile before we got him. He truly was frightened of nothing (well except steam jets getting his fetlocks from mill walls, - it's a long time ago) and understood traffic lights. He used to love to snort as we approached men working down man-holes in the road and make them jump. His other hobby was snorting at young cattle as we passed them and watching them run away.

I wouldn't shout at you. It's a sign of his trust in you that he took all this so calmly and sensibly. You've done very well in developing a good relationship with him

Of course you shouldn't have continued - same as you shouldn't walk into road works on foot/cycle on a closed road!

BUT he does sound amazing - you're really lucky :-)
