ony coming back off loan and removing shoes

just had a txt, my l/r gelding is coming back off loan

with no rider with me i'm going to have to find him another loan home.

In his loan home they have put shoes on him, would he be ok if i get my farrier to take them off or will he get foot sore? we dont have anything with shoes on and i dont really want to pay for shoes on him when he wont be doing anything with us.

You should ask your farrier for his opinion. He will be able to tell you if the pony can cope without shoes, or perhaps just with front shoes. It would cost more if he gets bruised or an abcess or concussion related laminitis if you just took the shoes off without assessing his hoof quality. The farrier may say to use keratex hoof hardener, I have found this works well in some cases.

If you want him to go back on loan, is it not worth keeping his shoes on, so any potential loaners can try him out thoroughly on the road etc without worrying about trying a potentially footsore horse?

See what your farrier says.

thanks will ask him when he comes home. i'm pleased to have him back for a while just not looking forward to looking for another home. just wish my daughter was old enough to ride him. i dont really know why they put shoes on him, he hacked out and everything without shoes before going on loan

If he's been well shod and hasn't had too much damage done to his feet, he should just walk out of them, totally oblivious. If not, it'll take a couple of months for his feet to heel and strenghten but he should still be field sound.

Many people shoe horses simply because 'that's what you do'.
