I was at a pony club rally last night and a typical 'we know nothing about horses' family pulled up with 3 ponies squeezed into a double ifor williams 505 trailer! Should I have said something to them or should I tell the DC?

Tell DC just for the ponies sake. I saw a converted caravan last year at a show with a big horse in, we took pics incase no-one believed us !

Last year at a hunter trial we saw someone do that with the same model Rice that we have, so we know it was a 2 horse one. I believe they had 2 in the partitions and then a smaller one in the front part.

Unbelieveable isn't it

In England we're all like OH MY GAAAAWD when that kind of thing happens...when I was in Spain, a horselorry the size of an English 2 pony lorry, had 9 horses comfortably fit on it! :O No partitions etc but they were FINE! (And there was a stallion in there too!)

I thought it was pretty impressive, wouldn't try it in england though, just because our horses aren't brought up that way :P

New livery once arrived at my yard - she had two mares with foals at foot. Arrived in the smallest trailer I have ever seen (i.e. looks like it should contain one standard horse and nothing else!), both mares about 14hh each squeezed in and the foals in front  They sauntered off quite relaxed so I assume they always travelled like that.

Sadly she also didn't pay her livery so didn't stay long!

Years ago, even before the days of cell phones:eek: We used to fit about a dozen horses in a cattle wagon for hunting etc. Tack/nets/blankets etc all lobbed in the luton, head to tail, no bandages, no boots, no hysteria, no messing. They used to travel just fine, no injuries, nothing. Times change eh? ...AND they'd stand in the lorry for half an hour whilst we were in the pub, then at the end of the day they'd stand there again until everyone was back.

Now, were we just lucky or was it because the horses were used to that sort of thing?

I wouldn't think anything of travelling 2 in partitions and a small pony infront, been there, done that.

My previous employer still does this, but with the hunters fully tacked up! The lorry they use is really a lorry designed for cattle/livestock with a few makeshift particians in place... admittedly there were never any injuries though

When my daughter was doing PC there was one mum who regularly turned up with two ponies in the trailer side by side and a shetland standing sideways under their heads. Never seemed to mind and no harm ever seemd to come to them.

My ex-boss went hunting in Ireland and was quite surprised to see how many tacked-up horses they could get into one lorry. But again they seemed happy enough and all unloaded safely when they got to the meet and back in again to come home.

Just to make you smile - many years ago my friend was moving house, not very far about 20 miles. On the day the lorry was all packed up and all that needed to be sorted was the shetland pony to go in the trailer - only problem was when her OH stood in the trailer to put the haynet in he went through the wooden floor (he was a big!! lad) she was furious to say the least. Anyway after much deliberation and the new owners waiting impatiently to take possession the decision was made - one shetland pony boxed in a hay bale corrall in the back of the removal lorry! (mind you the three seater settee had to go on the roof of the car (rather that than the pony) and loads of other stuff in the trailer. We stayed in the back of the lorry just in case - but the shetland loved it!! It stood as still as anything when taken up on the tail lift (surrounded by haybales and people) and when taken off at the other end wanted to go back on!!

An emergency situation that with hindsight she admits she wouldn't have done in a month of Sundays but at the time it was the only solution. Thank goodness elf and safety weren't about. I wish I could find the photograph taken at the time.

I know someone who altered their 510 to take 2 horses and a pony in the front. I'm sure it would be breaking the law on the nose weight on the tow-bar, but he did weigh it on the weigh bridge and it came in underweight to the gross weight of the trailer....

Our Shetland was a regular passenger in the living of the lorry to and from our local agricultural show. First up the ramp and in thru the living door and happy to stand under the luton and with a bucket strategically placed at his bum.

No idea what size a 505 is but we've certainly had 3 ponies in a 2 horse trailer before. They're small. They fit safely. So it happened...

When I moved here I was amazed at how few horses could fit in a lorry and how much bandaging they had on. :D

At the last yard I was at there is a pony that has always travelled in the front so now even if its him and one other he is happier travelling in the front.

I was at a show once when 3 were travelled in a trailer, two as normal with one in front. Now the one in front managed to get it's back leg down between front ramp and trailer(in the gap) presumably when they opened door foot fell down. they were there for awhile trying to get it free, owner was almost in hysterics as thought he was going to break his leg!! Luckily pony didn't panic and was mananged to be freed by kindness of strangers.

^ this.

A sight well used to seeing out hunting having the two hunters and a third in the front :) .

We ended up with a rescue pony at the yard & when the owner came to pick it up he arrived in his transit with a rope. Popped the rope round it's head, hopped in the back of the van and the pony hopped in quite happily with him! haha

similarly... We went hunting in Ireland last year and a wagon we thought would hold 4 had 6 or 7 on it, but they seemed to have travelled well and were clearly used to it, and the driver had a cctv camera in there to keep an eye on them.

Our trailer looks like an ordinary 2 horse trailer, but it is slightly longer, and was originally stalled for 3. Dad has adjusted it to take two big horses and have plenty of room to put bridles on at the front! I'm sure it would be a squeeze for 3 horses if they were much more than about 15hh though!

We used to do this, a Rice Farmers Hunt with two 14 hh ponies and a smaller one across the front. Towed by a Mercedes car. It was so long ago the Mercedes had a RECORD PLAYER, not even a cassette player.

I remember when I was a kid going to the beach with no less than 6 full grown horses in the back of a 7.5 ton lorry.... two in each partition... no boots no rugs just headcollars and leadropes and tied up nose to tail

Hmmm, my sister and I drove about 200 miles to a county fair with a pair of llamas in the back of her conversion van (as in the type that has been converted to have a couch and big comfy chairs in it). The llamas were in the way back behind the sofa where you'd stick the luggage! LOL

Another time she went to auction with her 4 pony trailer with a few llamas and a couple cages of peacocks. Always a spectacle, my sister!

when we were kids, we used to hire the local horsebox man to take us to shows. There would be about 6 or 7 in what was a cattle truck, with the odd bar here and there as a partition. I always remember the ponies tails coming through the sheep vents in the sides. Never had any issues with loading, we used to be so carefree and just had fun. Them were the days eh :)

I worked on a farm in Australia years ago - and the guy who I worked for used to put 4 tacked up horses on a similar truck to this - tied to the side with a bit of bailing twine!!

Love it.

Great post, made me smile after a stressful day.
When the children were smaller a friend and I always went to rallies/show's with 3 on our trailer, two in the partitions and 1 across the front. Spoilt all the fun when they got older and the ponies got bigger!

Agree. When I moved my mare, she shared a trailer with two donkeys, didn't bat an eyelid, most unusual for her :)
