Ooops - clipped my mare Lottery for the first time this evening as I have just upped her work regime and they packed up before I had finished

Fortunately, she doesn't have a mirror in her stable so I haven't told her how ridiculous she looks!

Just have to hope that Trixie her stable mate stays diplomatic!

My clippers are ancient, ancient Woolseys, they were given to me by a man who had retired from horses even before I met him 10 years ago

Luckily though a friend is coming over tomorrow with her clippers to finish off

But, on a more serious note - this mare spend nearly all last summer at stud (but not in foal) and then due to problems of my own she wasn't ridden up until Christmas hardly so she has only just come back into work in the last few weeks.

She lost a lot of muscle and weight but with excellent feeding advice from TGM, I think she has improved weight wise but I would really appreciate your opinion from an objective pair of eyes.

Don't hold back - tell me what you think!!

I am used to her being in tip top, hunting fit condition at this time of year so its quite sad to see her like this really

Anyway, I am off to LizzieJ's now so will catch up on any replies a bit later this evening

Lol not as bad as what I was expecting either....seen a few major boo-boo's clipping before!! Including the little ancient grandad cob at an old yard [well in his 30's with sway back, no teeth and cushings bless him but never acted sick or sorry!], they went to clip him as his coat stayed so dense all year round and didn't shed, and he got one side fully clipped....then the clippers packed up just as they went to start the other side!!!!! Poor boy went a couple of days being a ying-yang clipper pony before they could get more blades XD

Weight wise I think she looks very well. I don't like to see horses carry any extra weight, and altho' as you say she needs to mucscle up, I like the way she looks weight wise.

i think she's fine weight wise, just needs to muscle up. i hate it when people try and *feed* a topline....that big wobbly wedge neck is not muscle its fat!!!!! (rant not directed at op, just in general!!!)

I don't think its that noticeable at all - I probably wouldn't even of noticed if it wasn't the thread title!! I was expecting worse!

QR I don't think the clip looks too bad to be honest. Weight wise she looks sound to me and looks to have enough for her to start some conditioning work to build up those muscles. I am no expert and don't ever pretend to be. I am just giving an opinion like others. But I would say from the eye she looks a nice weight to start work as they can and do drop weight, I know as I had an ex racer last year and she has opened up my eyes as my other two are good doers lol. She has lost a little bit of weight this winter and this may have been due to her being in work also. She hadn't been ridden for a while prior to me having her, as she was an ex broodmare. However she was given to me in a state and when her teeth were done last backend vet was appalled and said had not been done for a very long time, and he was surprised she could even manage to eat. Now I had only her a matter of a few months by then and previous owners had had her most of her life.
She has only started working the last few months and has put a bit of weight back on again recently which is good and she looks good in every other way though. She was a good weight when we started her into work though hence why I was saying about the weight issue as personally I am glad she had a bit to spare before she started working to counteract any initial loss.
So Ravenwood I think she looks fine in body and in a few months time should look even better when she has toned up those muscles. Good luck

QR - Not a bad clip job at all! i wouldnt worry about it at if youre not going anywhere fancy

One of my bosses horses last year got quite upset whilst being clipped (good horse, just a stupid woman who had wanted to clip her for us upset her) and had to be left with only her left side clipped! this happened on my day off, it was quite a sight the next morning lmao! Poor thing had to stay like that for about another week :O

Lol I was expecting alot worse!! I might add pics of my mare at the min to make you feel better - my clippers packed up too so she has all off except part of her bum one side and all off up to bum, back leg and part of back other side!! Managed to get some off with trimmers - nightmare & cant fix it till my friend lends me hers Monday - thank god for full rug & exercise sheet :-D
Weight wise I think looks fine too just needs the muscle back which will come with work and time, better to be a little under than over :-)

I like the expression on the dog's face in the first picture

I too don't think it's all that bad and a bridle will disguise a multitude of sins

QR: Hi Ravenwood here on LizzieJ's log in!!

Thanks for all your replies and I am pleased that no one seems to think she looks as awful as I do

Now that the nights are drawing out and there is more chance to exercise I am hoping she will look better (back to normal) by the end of the season.

Of course once we get into summer I will be struggling to keep the weight off!!!
