Ooops I think I have broken mums washing machine

There should be a panel on it somewhere that you can take off so you can clean the filter. Be careful though because if the machine hasn't drained itself it will flood the kitchen when you take the filter cap off!!!

I once found about £2 in coppers the last time I cleaned ours out!!

As others have said could be the filter and I find on older machines that things get stuck in the pump too stopping it draining out.Sometimes the drive belt slips or breaks too.
I had the same problem on an old machine and after stripping it down I found the biggest pair of Bridget Jones style knickers bunging the pump up, had NO idea who's they were as although my then girlfriend was 17 stone they weren't hers as they were too large to fit her!
I actually did manage to blow up that machine in the end, it was a Hotpoint top loader which are good for rugs, I used to do all the rug washing in it and then repair the rugs for customers, mostly it coped but oneday I stuffed (forced) a 7 foot Shire Horse rug in it and it gave up the ghost, blew the clutch in half with a loud bang and puff of smoke it died!
I just put the lid down and walked away.
Oz :)

I killed my washer in the same way Beyond economical repair! So my £20 fleece rug ended up costing £300!!!

Sorry I know that's not what you wanted to hear

I know this isn't helpful right now but... I was in the local tack shop today and saw a horse washing bag (not to put your horses in ;)) for rugs, coolers, numnahs and anything else horsey that can be bunged in the machine. Basically you stick your rug (or whatnot) in the bag, zip it up and whack it in there. The idea is it cleans your horsey things without clogging the machine with hair, mud and gunk. I thought it was a great idea but the mothership put the kibosh on it by telling me in no uncertain terms were any of our horse's clothes going in her machine  Anyhoo, you get them in s/m/lrg and they cost less than £20. Might be worth a buy?

I managed to clogg our washer up with mud from a so called washable doormat. I had to dig up the pipe from the filter, to get the mud out, it took ages but did work and the washer is still going strong, some years later :D

Thanks. Mum did manage to get it working after a few choice words and the cats trying to 'help' by getting in it. I think its a good job I'm moving out tomorrow.
