I had a dramatic fall tonight. I was riding my horse in the menage and was cantering when he tripped over for some reason. There was no one around to tell me exactly how he fell but his face was covered in sand so I'm asuming he also fell to the floor. He certainly fell to his knees because they were also covered in sand. He has also taken a lump of skin out of his face. Poor pony!!! I obviously went straight over his head and fell face first onto the menage floor. Luckily I seem to have escaped with with a grazed chin and cut lip. He has never done anything like this this before and I'm sure my confidence is going to suffer when it comes riding him again. I'm also concerned that he tripped/fell in the first place. Ah well. I'm sure I'll ache tomorrow.

mickey my old pony sometimes trips if the ground isnt flat or his feet are long? hope your horsey is ok. and hope you arnt in to muck pain tommorow.

Yes, my horse seems ok. He looked just as shocked as I was and did his best to avoid stepping on me, which is always a good thing!! I think perhaps it was just one of those things. He certainly wasn't being naughty - he didn't spook or buck or anything.

Probably just one of those things - although it is unnerving when you don't know why something has happened. He was probably just not concentrating... I know I've tripped up plenty of times!

I wouldn't worry about it. Glad you are both ok(ish)

Check the menage where he tripped maybe some of the membrane has come up and he tripped over that. Glad you are both O.K. I think next time you should make sure there is always someone around the yard. If you'd fallen akward you don't know how long before anyone was there to help.

Yeah, my daughters pony tends to trip alot when he's lunged usually because he's not concentrating and looking for th perfect opportunity to either turn in or bronk! He's never tripped when she's been riding him though.(touch wood!)

Hope you both are ok and not too achey!

I have a good tip. My daughter is disabled and I try to give her as much independence as possible but there is always someone on the yard when she rides. I bought one of those wireless door bells and my husband attached it to one of the stable doors. Daughter has the press button bit in a mesh washing powder tablet bag tied to the saddle. She just presses for help. That way she can be alone but well supervised.

If our school hasn't been harrowed the horses sometimes trip up in it, its normaly where there is ahuge hoof print and they meet it wrong.

I know how you feel as I've sat on them as the completely go @rse over t!t and its not very nice. Hope you both feel better soon.

What a brilliant idea.

My only concern with this is what if she had fallen off and was unable to press the button?

Or are you still able to see her from the stables so it's only when she needs help to do something like open gates or put jumps up/down?

Sorry I'm just a worrier by nature.

Oh dear hope you and pony are ok!!

I understand why you'll be nervous riding again - when I first got my cob he was very unbalanced and regularly fell over in canter (fortunately never when I was on him but he did deck my RI) I found that wearing my BP gave me the confidence to just push him though it and now he is much better although if he loses confidence he does trip (I'm so used to it I barely notice now!)

I'm sure you'll both be fine!

I did that the other weekend on Oscar! Our outdoor school is really deep and he stacked it around the corner.....

Anyway you can get it dampened down? Sand schools are a night mare when they're dry......

Thanks everyone. I feel re-assured thats is happened to peeps on here. I lunged him tonight and he looked fine - just as sure footed as normal. The sand school is quite churned up and deep in parts at the moment so I think he must have just tripped. Fingers crossed, I'm going to get on him and go for a hack (with a friend for security) tomorrow night.
