We've got a yearling with open knees, who is been very lightly worked (longlining out around our land at walk). She is out during the day and in at night.
The past couple of days she has been looning around the field at full pelt with the others, and this morning she had a fat knee. It's hot with soft swelling. She's not lame on it, but when we turned her out she wasn't as keen as the others to canter round- she was more cautious than usual, although here foot falls etc were normal. There is no sign of a cut etc apart from a small graze about 3'' above the knee.
Could she have damaged the knee by doing too much? What are the problems and symptoms associated with open knees and the longterm prognosis? Any info would be great thanks

Several of the yealing/2yr old tb's l have helped break in,in the past, have had open knees.Basically we break them enough to get on and ride round the school but would not recommend them going into training(sometimes they still did) But if it was mine then l would leave until the knees have hopefully closed more! l would say the swollen knee is probably a bang or kick
