My Connemara x has always suffered with little scabs around his fetlock area and we've been treating them for well over 2 years now all year round but recently they have spread further up his legs which are clipped and washed in antibacterial scrub once a week with a Barrier cream on top to soften them and fight infection. They are incredibly raw and haven't closed in 4 days? Recently we tried using pig oil to keep the mud of him, could he have reacted to that? (We patch tested him and there was no scabs) any advice/
similar stories welcome :)

My heavily feathered mare can get scabs on her legs, usually udder cream sorts them out but just before Christmas we had to have the vet for Dectomax injections and Flamazine cream, which has healed them. She struggles in warm, damp weather that makes her sweat. It is a form of dermatitis.

It could be mallenders / sallenders (which is probably the dermatitis pearlsinger refers to. It could also be mites or just really bad mud fever. Either way you really need to get the vet out for a definitive opinion and some more intense treatment,

If it is a bacterial infection putting oily creams on it will actually trap in the bacteria and it will travel undet the skin to another area where it can break out.
Dilute hibiscrub followed by flamazine ointment is what my vet recommends and works very quickly.
