My spaniel has a horrible round open sore on his cheek just below his eye. I noticed it first two days ago and cleaned it and put on antiseptic cream. The next morning it was larger and weeping, again I cleaned it and applied cream. This morning it looked drier but this evening it is puffy and weeping again. It almost round in shape and nearly about the size of a 5p. It has definitely got bigger over the last two days.

There have been a couple of dogs (only spaniels) in our area which are covered in small lumpy scabs and one owner has spent a fortune on scrapings, tests etc but still no one has come to a conclusion although ringworm has been mentioned but non of her other 8 dogs have caught it.

Is it true that there are many varieties of ringworm and if my dog did have ringworm wouldn't there be other sores on him by now?

My OH thinks I should spray it with purple spray but I am worried about getting any in his eye.

Does anyone here have any experience with ringworm or similar?

do not use purple spray near the eye! ringworm wouldnt necessarily spread to other areas. it spreads via contact so only if you touched the sore then touched the dog elsewhere would it spread, or if the dog scratched himself and then scratched elsewhere. ringworm does not present as an open, weeping sore, it is more like a dried patch that is very itchy. although if your dog has been scratching like mad at it, he may have caused the sore he now has and introduced infection. if it is open then you need to go to the vet as your dog may well need antibiotics. there must be something causing the sore and you need to get to the bottom of it, it'l only get worse without treatment. it could be that your dog has a foreign body or a malar abcsess or it could be that a wart has been scratched by your dog and become infected. it definitely needs seeing, especially as its so near his eye. dont want to risk losing an eye if it becomes really bad. carry on bathing it with salt water (a teaspoon of salt to half a pint of water) and after bathing it, rinse the wound with plain water as the salt can cause irritation. you can apply a cream such as savlon to soothe the skin but if the skin is really open, dont apply a cream. hope that helps!!

Kat thanks for the v informative reply. My dog is not scratching or rubbing at the patch - in fact he doesn't seem to notice (only when I get out the cotton wool, then he shrinks!!) so perhaps its probably not ringworm then. I have actually been bathing it with v diluted dettol and putting on a very light antiseptic gel.

If it hasn't dried by tomorrow morning I'll pop him down to the vets (more expense!!)
