Opening a new Tack Shop advice needed?

If you want to stock some of the better and favourable Brands, you will need LOTS of money up front as so many suppliers insist on very expensive and large first orders. You will need cheap brands that can be bought all over the place, like Shires, then also the better brands like Mountain HorseJoules/Muto and upwards. You will also have to be SO competitive on price as customers tend to visit tack shops to view/feel etc, then search online for the cheapest price.

It would also be very beneficial to have staff trained and qualified in fitting hats, body protectors, saddles etc.

I'd make up a Facebook page and run a completion with likes to win a voucher to spend in your shop. That way you will have a base of local people liking your page you can then post on it when you have special offers or when new season stuff coming in it a great way to advertise and announce your opening. I would go to some local shows and do a survey there asking your local customer base what stock they would like. You could also make that part of your face book competition ie like our page and sate what horse brands you would like to see and you could win a voucher. You could post the competition on other local horsey based Facebook pages.

You could also consider a loyalty card my local tack shop has one. They take your name, address and email you get a 5% discount on stuff and then at the end of the year you get a voucher on £ percentage of what you have spent through the year is year I got £5 other years I've go £10 or £15. You then have everyone's email so you could send out a quarterly email informing people of new season to stock or and discounted stock you are trying to get rid off.
