I have a quick question, when I school my boy he spends a good deal of his time with his mouth open, he only starts doing this when I ask/he starts to go round. I hadn't realised until one of the girls kindly took some picks how badly he does this (pick below). What I was wondering was is could there be a reason for this (his back, teeth, saddle are checked regularly and are normally absolutely fine) and what I could do about it, I have tried riding him in a flash bit he seems to get stronger!
Thankies in advance

Have you tried a drop noseband? These are often more effective at keeping the mouth closed than a flash. They may have gone out of fashion, but they are the best for the job at hand.

I would be more than happy to change it, but I'm a bit clueless as to what to change it to, so any suggestions on that front would be v.welcome!

Alot of arabs have a dropped palate so cant tolerate chunky or single jointed bits.

He has a single point fulmer snaffle, although the fulmer stearing is normally more necessary to jump. It's not a particularly thick one though. He isn't really strong in the school. He's in that type of bit as he isn't strong and that was the one he had when we bought him so kept it that way. Is there anything better that I could try him in??
I haven't tried him in a drop, will give it a go though

Change the single joint to a double one with a lozenge or french link.

Please DONT shut his mouth closed whilst you still have a single joint in there. He will be opening his mouth because everytime you take a contact the single joint will jab him in the roof odf the mouth, so h opens his mouth to avoid it. Try a frnch link, or mullen mouthpiece, or one with curved bars to stop it hitting his mouth.

Ditto the above - when you take a contact, chances are that it is stabbing him in the roof of the month and hence why he has his mouth open!

Try a double joint bit (i prefer a lozenge to a french link), and I wouldn't recommend anything thicker than 14mm for an arab as they have tiny mouths.

Ditto Ditto Ditto, try replacing the single jointed bit as it has a nasty nutcracker action that many dislike.

My horse looks like he does the same but he opens his mouth and then draws his tongue back. Ive tried almost everything but cant seem to stop this habit.
