So a bit of background first....

My last mare I kept on a livery yard until I moved in with my OH on his family farm. When I sold her we decided to wait until we had the cottage and farm sorted a bit more before I bought another.

Well I am now thinking about it but we have a couple of obstecals to sort 1st.

As most of the farm is arable we only have about 2 acres of grazzing and one of those acres we keep the old veteran mare and a mini shetland as the grass is poor and we need to watch for lami in them both. The Veteran is suplemented to try and keep some weight on her but we never expect her to manage much longer although she always surprises us.... she is 34. We have a block of stables that could do with a little TLC is I put my new one in there as although they are huge stables they only have small doors?!!!!! and an asbestos roof.

Now the choice I have for my new lad would be.....

A. Lift and reroof current block this has 3 stables and a tack/feed room water and electric and is close to the house. Fence the 1/2 acre paddock infront of stables for winter turnout and fence 1/2 acre paddock otherside of house for summer but I could do both of these with mains electric. Feed adlib hay.
B. Build larger stable under the barn for just my lad. This would need all concreting but I could have stable and feed/tack room but it is away from the others. Have grazing as above. Feed adlib hay.
C. Rent 2 acres off my FIL and have him out 24/7 with shelter. I would have to pay for this to be seeded and wait and also and shelter and fence. This is out of sight from the house and I would also need to take water but prob less hay needed and not much company for him.

If I went with lifting the breeze block stables I was thinking of using Yorkshire boarding but not sure what roof? Any ideas on these?

There is also the option of not keeping him at home and keeping him at liver but don't really want to deal with all that again if I can help it.

Hay- I always fed little bales but I was thinking of 1 large bale a month as I have plenty of storage. Do you think this sound about right for a 16hh hunter type? This is obviously very rough estimate?

I would re-roof existing stables and do grazing as you've said, how nice sounds lovely

A friend and I used to share large bales, 1 used to last 2 horses about 2 1/2 weeks depending if they were kept in in the snow we'd use more
