Opinions: 24/7 turnout or not?

Naw, her mane looks pretty decent and thick - you'd be amazed how fast it comes down... Fergs is long but not thick - it was all chewed off by a friend's horse a couple of years ago

I have very hairy animals :o This one takes the biscuit :o

I would rather a nice, less hairy but stunning creature like yours when it comes to grooming and bathtime! ;)

JFTD - Thanks, I trimmed it a bit in November as it was straggly in places and it has improved:)
Nice collie in the background, BTW...I have a black and white one snoozing across from me! He met his very first horses when off lead today and didn't bat an eyelid. Just trotted along nicely. Am very proud of him:o

ETA: Have you seen her in mud monster mode?!

Aw bless, my previous collie was a b&w - lost him just before christmas :( Love them to bits, but couldn't bare to have another so similar to DT in the house after him, so we got the sable/white Wolf-pup. He's scared of the horses until I'm on them, then he gets far too personal! Fortunatey all the beasts are used to collies ;) Wish mine was as well mannered as yours!

Sorry about your other dog:(
I got very lucky with Loki, I think. He's from working lines, and the farmer who bred him used to let the pups follow their dam around at milking time so they were used to behaving around cattle.
We had him on lead around horses before and set down the ground rules early on. Always scary when they are off lead in a new situation and you don't know if the training will hold 100%

Update!
Have spoken to the yard manager and they have room for one more mare wise! Am going to view tonight on way back from yard:D

Good luck :)

Dont forget to start writing 'the' list of everything you should remember to ask (we all forget something!) adn remember to poke in all corners & see ALL the turnout including the hidden/furthest fields and their fences & gateways etc

Lol, am writing my list of questions at the moment! The yard is BHS approved and has a riding centre on site. I had lessons there last year and what I saw of the fields then looked good. They have a contract too, which is good.

Mine have been out 24/7 for 4 years next month. They love it, and have wintered so much better every year. If you could have the option of a box it would be great, but to be honest, between 6 horses over that time, we have only needed to hire a box at a local yard twice.

I would go on DIY livery - and then turnout out 24/7 during the summer.

That way you have your stable for the whole year for when you need it.

well if hippo is an arab then you might have the opposite problem to me. We had an arab living out in the same herd as my pony and in the end she had to come in as she was getting too skinny.

If Arizahn's hippo is anything like mine - she'll soon be threatening her with a grazing muzzle. :p

This poor ickle pony has been made to live out 24/7 her whole life except for a couple of weeks when she was injured (and sedalin became my best friend ;) ).

Faracat - were our horses separated at birth by any chance?:D

Update: OH and I visited the yard today and spoke to the manager in person, as well as some of the other staff and clients. Everything is in order.

The fields are in great condition and they turn out in small same sex herds. Fencing is safe and secure, automatic drinkers are clean and working. The indoor and outdoor schools are massive and floodlit for riding after dark. They also have a cross country course:eek:

Liveries get discount on lessons, £10 per hour for a group lesson. There is storage for tack and feed, 24/7 surveillance, and several miles of private trails to hack out on:D

Stabling is available for horses on box rest, etc. There are also plenty of places to use for grooming and tacking up. They have regular vet and farrier visits, as well as a worming programme.

So I have booked the space, and we will move there at the end of April. I'm going to buy our current YO something nice, for when I hand in my notice. I will miss where we are but we will be cutting our livery bill in half, and petrol costs too. Twenty minutes drive...bliss!

It's in Northern Ireland, I'm afraid! Although you could take the ferry, lol!
I do hack...but we would have a dual carriageway en route, so not sure if this would be feasible. Is it even legal? I've never had to wonder before; always ridden on quiet country roads:o
I'd better brush up on my highway code:eek:

I've crossed over dual carriage ways but not sure it would be wise (or legal?) to ride up one. Hmm, that is a bit of a bugger if there's no alternative route...

It couldn't be further away from me

I will have to pay a transporter, I think. Hippo does eventually load; just takes a bit/loads of patience and a lot/near infinite amount of bribery...she travels well once she's on board though:)

It sounds like it ticks all the boxes...

Good luck and have fun there... Er, once you are past the Hippo loading saga... :)

All of mine re out 24/7 now and are very happy with it. Everyone has come out of winter at a good weight and now we're partitioning/rotating their field so that it doesn't get too good for spring/autumn :) works well for us, my mare is much happier. Though that said, she isn't the complaining type anyway! And of course, we have stables if we wanted to bring them in, I just dont! :D
Good luck, new yard sounds great.
