opinions -finances everything costing more

Ok well opinions needed and im sure this must apply to others. I have 3 at livery daughters pony my older mare who I compete on and a nearly 5yo who will take over from mare in 2/3 years and eventually for daughter. I bought him for a good price and I like having 2 horses, he has become a project and I enjoy them both for different reasons.

Anyway everything has gone up this year, fuel, feed cost of living etc etc. Whilst I still can afford where I am (£390 pm for the 3 DIY)+ hay etc im thinking that if things continue to rise as predicted I think i might have to re think. I have already decided not to renew my mares BSJA next year and concentrate on BE, . I have 1 event a month paid for by boss and I pay for one. Daughter does 2 a month too. I have cut down on my lessons from 4 a month to 1 or 2 sometimes none. The only other alternatives is to move to a yard nearer to save fuel ( i have looked but seem to be struggling to find anywhere) I keep looking. Or do I stay where i am and sell young project horse??

I really really dont want to do this as we are finally getting somewhere. Yard is OK but recently not. Lots of new liveries so now it seems impossible to ride or jump as we get people walking round school all evening (yes literally). Daughter wants to move as she gets fed up with things too. I like the facilities but get fed up too.

Has anyone else been faced with same decision?? I want to hear all opinions as really at a cross roads now. I like YO she is nice and has helped me alot, so feel a certain amount of loyalty as been there 2 years

I'm not thinking of moving - but do agree that everything seems to be going up at a much faster rate than my income

And it isn't just the horse stuff, everything is going up so not only does it cost more to keep the horses, there is just less in the kitty each month to play with
 
lots of people out there are looking to help out with riding and stable work and willing to pay a contribution, it is hard to find someone you trust but i would say easier in your situation, with having 2 horses you can ride out with person on 'trial' and see how you feel about them and the way they are with your horses. maybe not something you'd like to do but it would certainly help out with your situation without having to move your horses and upset your routine, other than obviously introducing a new face/rider!
 
I know from last year things are so much more money not necessarily horse stuff everything, I have to go to yard twice a day which adds up to approx 30 miles a day with the fuel going up I have really noticed it
 
would you put a horse out on loan then? or rather just sell? you could put your youngster out on loan to someone experienced to bring him on in his training then get him back when its time for him to take over your mares workload!
 
Thing is though is at 4 its really important he has the right foundations so loaning him might ruin him if he doesnt go to the right home. He cost alot ( cheap but still a few grand) so dont think i would risk loaning him.

Have looked at another angle. Might look around for better paid job. Whilst mines ok and has benefits im sure I could earn more. Thanks LT If I sold him then the responsibility wouldnt be mine then if he was spoilt Selling will be the last resort and I would still need to compete him a bit later in the year so I could sell him with a record
 
Few thoughts...but fogive me as I don't know your full circumstances...
- Do you work full time? If not you might be able to earn a bit extra by doing something part time to fit in with horses and children?
- We have had a major look at our finances recently and found we were spending £300-£400 on our food shopping per month!!!. So we have started to buy on a monthly basis and get ingrediants to make different meals throughout the month that can be frozen. We have now cut our entire months food down to £150! And we have nice home cooked food in the freezer that is easy to re-heat at night.
- Look at things like any mobile phones costs...do you really need something on a contract when you could save money by having a pay as you go? Only works if you are a low user.
- The fuel is a major cost for me too so I have cut out all un-necessary hourneys and doubled up on things so I burn less!
 
God i agree with cost and everything increasing and ive noticed it myself, especially with fuel...Im looking for new jobs so i can get some more money and im trying to watch what i buy horse wise and food shopping!!

Where abouts are you out of interest? Im in SE to

I know what you mean, I was saying the other day that I have never spent so much on my horse as I am now.
I'm not really doing anything differently, I have a lesson once a fortnight and I haven't competed for ages.
I live 9 miles away from my yard and so 2 trips a day is 36 miles, and my car only does 25 MPG

Dont think there is a solution unless prices go down and I win the lottery. I will just have to put up with it all like everyone else!!

Soon DR Green Grass will be here and I will save loads in fuel and feed so will put up and shut up. I cant have it everyway I suppose. Its not now im ok atm its if things continue to rise as they are to next winter. Got all summer to plan I suppose. Will have to start winning some money at competitions!

But in the meantime if anyone has a brilliant idea then please share.
