Opinions/ideas on the best 4x4s

So I am finally getting the 4x4 I've been looking into for ages :) and although I thought I knew what I wanted, now that the time has arrived I'm getting myself all worried again!!
Basically am going to be using it for an every day vehicle too so want something that's not too heavy on juice! Needs to be able to tow 2 horses happily, will only be towing one the majority of the time but he travels better with company and want to have the option there anyway.
I've been looking at alot of Kia Sorentos which I'd only really heard of recently but they seem to be really good from what I've heard!
Also been looking at Nissan X-Trails.
Anyone had any good/really bad experiences with these or any other 4x4s?
Budget is around abouts the 4000k area give or take depending on what is on offer!
 
The x trail is too light to tow two horses, I wouldn't tow one. You need something like a Toyota Surf or Prado rated to tow 2 and 2.2 (from memory) ton braked.

Double horse float approx 800kg, 2x horses 1 tonne +, add in gear and water etc.
 
Hmm... I don't personally think a Nissan xtrail is too light. My friend tows two with a swb defender. It's not just the weight, it's the capacity. In CR there is an expert called ROG and you can contact him or use the towing clinic thread to get a definitive guide.

I have a Nissan Patrol which I love! I rate the Isuzu trooper. I had a Defender and not sure I would have one again...
 
Another vote for the Kia Sorento.

Fab family car, good 4x4 and great for towing. Mine is the diesel model and less thirsty than previous 4x4's owned.

Mine is an 05 plate, done 96,000, and have had no major bills other than routine issues -love it!
 
We've got a 2001 Disco TD5 auto..for towing, transporting tack/4 kids/2 dogs, safely & comfortably nothing is too much effort for it.. I'll always have Discos from now on. They may be a bit heavier on juice than others but for me the good far outweighs that. Good luck :D
 
X trails are rubbish - not upto proper work. If someone invents a 4x4 that tows 2 happily without blowing a turbo and is cheap on fuel can someone let me know?!! Otherwise you are looking at disco's, shoguns, rodeos etc well capable but the side effect is they are heavy on fuel.
 
I think that X trails are used mainly for towing one horse especially in a single lightweight horse trailer and that is born out in the survey on what members vehicle and trailer combinations are and how they rated them in the link in my signature below

They are very well supported by the B only licence towing fraternity because the X trail with single horse trailer can easily conform to B licence towing rules
