opinions needed QUICK

I'd leave it to be honest - same sort of thing happened to someone on our yard, they bought a horse from someone selling on behalf of someone else and it all went horribly wrong. The horse wasn't what she said it was but the lady at our yard had no come back as the girl just said it wasn't her horse so she coudn't really be held responsible for what had happened after it left her yard etc. She wouldn't take him back and susequently the lady had to sell him herself and she lost a lot of money on him.
It's just put me off - although I'm sure there are plenty of genuine people selling horses on behalf of clients.
I'd be interested to know who's selling the horse as we're not a million miles away from each other - PM me if you want.

If he bucks in the school, what will he do out on a hack on spring grass??? My gut instinct says don't do it. Can I also be cheeky and question why you need a 17hh horse - I'm 5'11 and my girl is 16.1 - I feel very comfortable on her, I would feel far too leggy is she was a narrow TB.
 
i too am 5' 11 but always look really big on anything under 17hh, i look really long in the body on them, and top heavy. I suppose it is what you are used to. Surely though it is not the size of the horse, any horse can put in a buck.

My head is a shed this morning, thought sleeping on it would help but it didn't, lol
I suppose i should say, if i'm not 100% sure, i should walk away, but i am so indecisive at the best of times. I can never just make a decision

Yes but you said the horse had a bronco fit - quite a difference. It sounds like it has done it before so unless you are 100% confident if it happened again you would not be worried and you love the horse in every other way then go for it. If not I would seriously walk away.
 
The bucking incident was with my girl on board. He did about 3 in a row, not huge ones, did unseat her, but they were not malicious i'm pretty certain that he was just full of beans. It isn't the bucking that worries us. If he had reared at any time i would have been outta there!!
It would have been nice to buy a horse and still be in touch with his owners, so if there were any problems i could feel ok about picking up the phone and seeing her feelings and advice. Also of course to say, yep he's great, we won our first class today, etc, etc. Now feel that that could not happen, that is why i was fed up in OP. She went from saying "if you want to ring me and ask any more questions, etc please do" to sending a snotty text about buying him.
 
I would wait. I don't believe that someone selling a horse would let a stranger on it without some sort of preparation. 3 bucks and unseating a rider is sufficient for me to say that the horse is not for someone who is not confident. There WILL be other horses - don't rush into anything!
 
Serious alarm bells are ringing for me.

1) Why is someone selling it for the owner? Because the owner can't manage it anymore perhaps, other person more experienced in pulling the wool over?

2) The bucking thing would TOTALLY put me off and I would NOT believe that turn out crap.

3) Why are they pressuring you?

Having bought a horse in scarily similar circumstances (except horse didn't buck in the trial) I'd RUN FOR THE HILLS. Seriously.
 
Hun, walk away while you still can.....spend your money on something that feels right, because all I see here is you desperately trying to convince yourself that this is 'the one' when you're already having doubts.

I'd walk away in that situation. I've had all my riding horses on trial for a few weeks before i've bought. I know as a seller they are taking a risk but i just don't like it when people say no, it puts me right off.
 
I would not buy it - the fact that you have put up this post says you have doubts - wait until you have the one that you have no doubts about.

When you find him/her you will know - I only bought one horse that I did not click with instantly and regretted it for a long time afterwards.

Why is the owner not involved? Makes me suspicious that they are not prepared to answer questions etc.
 
Owner has answered questions before.
I do like the horse, i just have serious trust issues with people!! I have doubts about every decision i make... that's me i'm afraid

If you feel you can deal with the bucks and really click then get him, if you have concerns about the bucks and still are asking yourself if he is the one for you, then think carefully and keep looking.

Have you tried him on grass - do you want to hack - if you do then try him hacking if you haven't already. It may be that he really explodes on grass - can you deal with this (not doubting your ability here).

My youngster has unseated me once - and yesterday had a little tantrum and gave two small rears - this is a baby - but I would not want it from an older established horse - getting too old to fall off.
 
QR The fact that you requested him to be lunged before he was tried in the school suggests to me that you don't really want a horse that bucks.

I honestly think you would be making a mistake buying this horse.

I asked for him to be lunged in the school first, purely for him, maybe i'm mad, but thought that as he has no turnout. It would be good for him if he wanted to have a buck and a play before he was asked to work.
Also of course it is nice to see that a horse lunges well or if it is a nightmare. Same as seeing it load, etc

I know a few people who lunge as standard before they get on. Anyway he was only lunged for about 5 mins and was good as gold, went straight into work mode. Did not put a foot wrong ridden either. Was in a new surrounding.

i just don't know what to do, but you all seem to have the same opinion. So maybe i should just wander away

I think that you need to assess how you are going to keep this horse. Do you have winter turnout and if you dont can you ride every day to keep him sane and not turn the mild bucks into more of an issue.

Also am slightly concerned, he is 14yrs old and had been having a bit of turnout and still bucked with you. I dont look at anything twice if it bucks when trying it, not worth the risk. If you are wanting to compete and take him out will he buck then if really excited?!

Also a lot of sellers say they have someone else coming to see the horse when they possibly may not. Take that with a pinch of salt. I would wait and see what tomorrow brings with the "other" viewings.

I also have a strong belief that you are in the stronger position, not the owner, no matter how good the horse is. They are, at the end of the day selling something and should be quick to please you, not be rude. That would put me right off, especially as you are possibly going to be giving them a lot of money soon!!

Walk away from this one and find a horse and owner with a few more manners!

However, after saying all that....if your heart is truely set on this horse, snap it up!

Only you know how you truely feel about the horse. Good luck!!
