My arab has all of a sudden got a swollen shoulder,i brought him in from the feild 2 weeks ago to find hes shoulder muscle was very swollen, much bigger compared to the other.
He used to be an ex-racer & i thought maybe that could have somthing to do with it? ie. he may of built more muscle up on one side & i just havnt noticed it ?
He was lame on hes front leg - the same side as swollen shoulder, however hes not anymore, lasted about a week.
He doesnt seem to be in pain when i touch it and push down - its farely hard & hes been cantering around the feild with hes horse buddies & new foal :)

A vet was meant to of come out to have a look at him however he failed to come,i've called a back doctor but he cant come out until another week.
personally i think hes shoulder swelling is going down. but some one has recently told me they think he may of broken hes shoulder.
i dont beilve this as hes not lame anymore & is not in pain, however they told me that he doesnt have to be lame or show hes in pain because the break could be high up in hes shoulder/

im completly baffled - im only 17 i aint no expert.

maybe some suggestions & opnions would help.

many thanks

He may have been kicked. If i were you i would phone another vet just in case. Its unlikely to be broken because the lameness is better but you should get a decent equine veterinary opinion rather than guessing.

Have a vet check just in case. Sounds like he might have been kicked but you need to be sure its not something worse.

If you can still pick up all his legs it's unlikely to be a broken shoulder. However it sounds as if it would be worth the vet having a look at him. What sort of vet just doesn't turn up to see an injured horse? I'd be thinking of changing vets.

Definitely get a vet to have a look. If it's been swollen for this length of time then it's better to be on the safe side even if your horse is no longer lame. Could well be a kick - haematomas can go hard and take a while to go down but I'd recommend getting a professional opinion.

My daughters pony had a haematoma which was a sudden swelling on her shoulder muscle. She was in a fatty patch on her own at the time so don't know how she did it. It went down gradually over time but I was told to ring and get vet out again if it felt hard at any time.
