From another forum:

Should add a note that this person is in the UK, and the horse in in a developing country.

"My family is part of this animal association which helps abandoned horses and it has recently received a horse which had been run over by a truck and has its leg broken. She is however 9 months pregnant and the vets do not want to put her to sleep until she gives birth. Thing is all of this is going on in Romania and we are looking for a suspending harness that will keep the horse standing for a while until the birth can be induced and the horse can be put to sleep then."

I personally think that's awful, not at all fair on the mare.

I wonder what they are doing with the mare in in the meantime, how is she standing? All sounds a bit odd.

I can only assume that she is not, given that the person has said they don't have a harness at all.

Surely it's kinder to put the mare to sleep now and also the foal because what is going to happen to the foal once it's born? Unless they have a surrogate mare on stand by (which i very much doubt) the poor foal will go through so much stress and it probably won't have much of a life anyway. Cruel to be kind, is the saying here

OMG PTS, poor poor mare, I can see no benefit to this unless foal is some potential prodigy with years of constructive breeding and millions af pounds behind it, then, maybe you would be excused for wanting to try, but this is soooo inhumane.

i thought it wasnt possible to induce a mare or that foals didnt survive if they were induced i'm sure there was a similar situation to this on here a while ago and they couldnt induce it?

i think the this is horrible the poor horse should be pts as soon as possible its gonna spend it last few months in misery and pain give birth only for its foal to be taken away and then it will be pts anway!

how on earth do they know that the foal is still alive?! can't see the justification in trying to keep this poor mare alive for the sake of a foal of probably unknown parentage
mad.gif
and if by some miracle they save the foal are they really set up to hand rear it
confused.gif

sometimes just because we can keep something alive doesn't mean we should

especially when it is to make us humans feel better about ourselves rather than the welfare of the animal

SUggest they put the UK person in touch with ILPH ( World whatever new name now) as they probably have contacts in Romania who could intervene.

Poor mare should be pts straight away. I think WHW (can't get used to that name) have representatives in Rumania, so hopefully they could intervene.
