What are these like now? I'm looking for a fairly cheap detachable neck turnout for a cob (not a heavy traditional type), I don't want to spend a fortune since I'm not convinced he's finished growing. Only for daytime turnout and isn't out with rug wreckers. Do they come up big or small? His 6'3" Shires one is starting to look rather snug. The one I'm looking at is the Pro PFC if that makes a difference.

I had a basic one a few years ago and the front fitted a bit strange and it leaked after about 2 years I personally wouldn't buy another one.

I tend to buy shires or weatherbeeta and I have 2 detachable neck shires rugs and are really pleased with them.

Do you think if you went up a size in Shires that would fit?

I used them when my horse was young and growing; specifically the funny Christmas designs.

This would be 2014/15.

They were true to size, fitted him well and were durable. The other horse he was in with was a rug ripper and destroyed my horses rugs but one of the Derby Houses made it unscathed despite being a low denier. The one the did get ripped only ripped in a nice right angle so was easy to repair.

I found them really good value for a growing young horse

Pinkyboots I could get another Shires - though I think a 6'6" may be a bit big - but the equivalent would be a more expensive, and if I'm going to have to spend more I probably wouldn't go for Shires.

TPO, thank you.

I think they have massively upped their game design wise recently. I bought a rain sheet last year that was very well cut and good quality. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another from them atm.

I just bought the 'Elite Lightweight Detach-A-Neck PFC Free Turnout Rug'. Horse came in Sunday after a rainy night absolutely soaked through. Trying to find time to contact them via their web chat about it because what's the point of a waterproof that isn't? I have absolutely no other use for it, it's a no fill rain sheet! If it had been cold he'd have been a popsicle.

Real shame cos it's an attractive rug and fits well and I like a liner system and detachable neck :(

Maxima Equestrian turnout rugs are usually a nice fit for cobby types and are very reasonably priced considering they are all 1200 denier. They have fully adjustable front fastenings to make it easier to get a good fit plus allows a little bit of growth room! You can choose whether you have a fillet string or leg straps. I generally avoid 600 denier turnout rugs as they tend not to be as waterproof plus rip very easily.

I used to use them and found them good value for a rug wrecker but this was a couple of years ago now.

The Gallop 1200d ones might be worth looking at and shouldn't be too much more expensive. I bought one at the end of last winter and haven't used it much but it fit well and was probably a slightly better rug than the DH.

How did you find the fit on Gallop? Mine is a bit between sizes. I saw they do a 50g and am tempted.

I love mine! Its my most used rug for the pony and cob. It comes up big. I dont think the fit would be quite as good on a TB type, but have never tried to confirm so may be wrong

I bought a Derby House rug a couple of years ago - considering the price, the fit was fine and it was pretty tough. It lasted a couple of years and has now gone on the pile for spare parts! I have literally just bought another one (PFC free) so I very much hope it is ok. I have had shires which seem to fall apart and rip really quickly and wetherbeetas which aren't much better ime. I have 2 very boisterous geldings that enjoy towing each other round by any part of a rug they can get their teeth onto so I hate buying rugs for either of them and refuse to buy them 'decent' or expensive ones. As long as the fit is ok and they keep them dry that works for me!!

My mum bought a Gallop (50gm I think) for her last TB and it was an awful fit. It gaped so badly and looked like a minidress on him. Couldn't figure out what shape of horse it was meant for!

I've just bought some Swish rugs, they've stood up really well and a great fit. Ponies have never come in wet, no matter how horrible the weather!

I have changed all my rugs to Derby House Elite range these are the ones with the liner system. I cannot rate them highly enough, I have just purchased the other two liners that they have brought out, so we are all set for the winter. They survived perfectly last winter and so far so good. I have only purchased one of there rugs the rainbow one which was just a waterproof sheet, unfortunately is did leak, but they were so helpful when I contacted them. There customer service was excellent.

Thank you for all the replies :)

I ended up getting the 6'6" because there were no 6'3" in stock and I have to say it fits him very nicely indeed. I'd be tempted to order a couple of others but he's come up very quarters high and so I'm not sure anything I buy this winter will fit next winter!
