So my boy has been barefoot for about a year. I used farrier previously to trim foot and have now switched to a bf trimmer.

Would just like opinions on his feet. Feel they are going in the right direction. Currently treating for thrush.

Here is photos from a year ago

I really hope someone more knowledgeable replies, because I can't see much improvement between the before and afters, and I would expect a lot more in a year... sorry...

Is the horse sound?

Heels are very long. Another who is interested if the horse is sound?

Horse is sound in school abd flat surface. Needs boots for hacking.

I didn't think much improvement but have now managed ro find a trimmer. Is on a barefoot diet but does have ems

I think they are in some ways worse, the frogs are not functioning due to the heels being too long and due to this he now has thrush which will continue to be a problem until the frogs make proper contact with the ground and gain correct function, this is also preventing the heels from spreading they still look much the same as a year ago, the frogs have become smaller not larger and more beefy as they should. The off fore seems to have a fair amount of flare and both fronts have a stretched white line I would want to be doing plenty of work with him to get the feet conditioned providing he is sound enough.

I have just seen that he has ems that may be having some influence on how he is coping but he needs to use the foot to get them conditioned and improved, can he cope with roadwork without boots? if he can then I would start to do a little more with him, even if it is just 10 mins after other exercise, work on a sand school can be good as it should be a little abrasive but still get the frogs working, until they are functioning he will probably continue to be footy and the heels will remain contracted, the problem is it can be a vicious circle if the metabolism is not quite right or diet needs tweaking.

what sort of surfaces is he on? They look like feet that would benefit from being on something conformable like the pea shingle at rockley to encourage him to use his palmar hoof as it is so contracted/high under run heels and small frogs that it can't be doing much currently. Have you treated for thrush previously too? Has the trimmer suggested what they might do differently to the farrier.

Yes he is fine on the roads it's just if there's a stony patch. Will his frogs not be working in the boots? How often would you recommend road work. He is worked in a grass field and I have option to hire school so could manage once per week. How regular would tou trim too. Have heard mixed opinions of don't trim and trim every 3 weeks!!

He is currently worked on a grass school and out in the roads/tracks out hacking. Will be hiring a sand school once a week too. Unfortunately don't have access to pea shingle but would love to do a track system. Trimmer had mentioned that she was gradually going to bring tOe back in both feet. Lower the heel in LF and bring heel back and more raised in RF. The bars were to be smaller so frog can support the foot. Hopefully more concavity too. She used more technical terms but that was what I got from it.
