Opinions on freezemarking please.

I've had my mare nearly a year now and even though she is freezemarked, the previous owners hadn't kept it going with Farmkey and I never got any papers or anything (got her passport though). I got in touch with Farmkey and gave them her number and it all corresponded and they have sent me the forms through the post. My question is, is it worth the money each year. I keep thinking that the freezemark on her back is a deterent in itself to thieves. Don't get me wrong, I would be very upset if she was stolen, I'm just weighing up whether its worth doing. She's 16yrs old and a family pet rather than a valuable competion horse. Opinions please.

Yes, absolutely, register her. It gives you the full back up should she be stolen, and her age and low level of use will not prevent her from being stolen. Check out Freezemark.biz too as they may be cheaper (they can register horses Freezemarked by any company if the Registration has expired). It is a small price to pay.

Mine is registered with farm key and every now and again I get a text with details of a horse or pony that has been stolen and is registered with them. I want to know that if my boy went missing I would have that kind of back up.

I've only recently had my mare freezemarked, but I will always keep up the registration. If a horse is found with a freezemark, The Police, Animals Welfare organisations etc tend to contact Farmkey. Farmkey is the best known register and the biggest system of notiffing relevant people when a horse is missing. I know that Freezemark is owned by the woman who is said to have started it all, but Farmkey is the best known and most often contacted, so thats the one for me
