As per the title really.

Does anyone have any thoughts or opinions on the hay bars? I am thinking of getting one for me mare as she seems quite happy throwing her hay all around her stable and mashing it into her bed. Can't give her haynets as she has a wonderful knack of getting her feet caught - no matter how high they are!!!

Any thoughts or suggestions?

We made our own haybars and they are brilliant! Yes they do drag the hay into the bed sometimes but I much prefer it to haynets.

I love mine too - some times he drags hay out, but the majority of the time he makes hay tunnels right down to the bottom!

I love mine - hate feeding out of haynets and makes a right mess feeding just on floor. Can still pull out but mine tends to pull the top bit out then eat that then eat the rest out of his haybar. Couldn't do without it now.

I did have them, but Ella (huge mare) used hers as a bottom scratching post and it soon collapsed under the strain

. Mishky (huge gelding) couldn't get his very large head in his very easily and Ljuf (little grey Icelandic) just got all the hay out of his and put it in his bed

. The two little ponies are too tiny to have haybars. So they weren't a great success - but other people with "ordinary" horses seem to get on well with them and the idea is great. Someone on here made theirs from rubber mats and they looked fab and much cheaper than a haybar as one mat made two.

Well I have one and Finn just chucks his hay out. I do put a little tub in the bottom of it to catch all the crap and put some straw at the botton to so he doesn't have to reach too far.

I was thinking of getting a hay bar a while ago but I know for certain that my cob will pull hers out and tramp it into her bed, and my other horse will prob do the same too! So I have been looking at the munch stations on ebay/ in robinsons catalogue- I haven't got them yet so can't comment on their success but I think they may be a good alternative to the hay bar for horses that like to pull all their hay out.
