I am looking to insure my OTTB, recently passed 5* vetting. I’ve heard mixed opinions about this company so what are people’s views? What are some other insurance companies with a reasonable charge that actually pay out?

My experience with insurance emporium has been good so far. Been with them since March. Not long after I bought the horse I put in two claims for the same issue (sudden lump appearing above eye). They paid out both claims without a quibble. Yet to have a renewal so will see what that is like.

Only positive things to say here, although would recommend going through a specialist equine insurance broker as you can save money. Premiums are considerably lower than other providers although some have percentage excess. They used to have a bad rep for lengthly payments- they’ve not been the fastest although have reliably paid out each time (several maxed out claims for different horses over the past 6 yrs or so). My vets were happy to work with them.

I’ve been with E&L for years and claimed a lot. Bit slow but was never a problem.
More recently I’m now mid claim and having panic attacks about getting money in with each invoice. So far they have (eventually) paid but it seems to get slower each time and they are reviewing each invoice (where as previously once a claim was accepted they have just paid til either the year was up or the claim limit reached) and I have to fill out a continuation of claim form with every invoice (as does my vet)
Obviously the form is exactly the same each time, seems pretty pointless.
They also point blank refuse to pre authorise anything. So for me at the moment my vet wants to bone scan which she estimates at about 1.5/2k but I have to be able to cover that if they decide for some reason not too.
This is quite difficult.
So up until recently I’d have thoroughly recommended now I’m not quite so sure. If they continue to pay I will continue to use them because they are half the price, however if they don’t then it’s not a saving worth making!
