Opinions on Oldenburgs...

Hi guys,

I am in 2 minds and was wondering what other people think..

I have a dutch warmblood who I event at Novice level at the moment, and I have been looking to get a youngster to bring on.

I have found a rising 3 yr old Oldenburg gelding that I REALLY like. He has a great temperment, nice movements and is just a very sweet, willing, honest horse.

I don't know ANYTHING about Oldenburg horses, I have read up that they are well known for thier paces, so would be good for the dressage, but I cant seem to find much about thier jumping ability, stamina, and speed. I am looking to bring on whatever I end up buying to event at Novice level atleast!

I understand that all horses are different and you may have one that is a superstar and one that wont go anywhere near a jump, but just wanted to know what other peoples views on this breed are and any past experiences with oldenburgs.

to be honest you could also post this in breeding might get better response !!

I dont go on who they are registered with either i go on who their sire/dam are

I have an oldenburg (i bred her in england though) her sire is balou du rouet and she is an oldenburg as that is who he is graded with but i could of also got her registered with AES (which is what i did with the next one!!)

who is the horse sire?
 
Oldenburgs are mostly known for being an 'open' studbook without the historical discipline bias of some other books.

The actual breeding is far more the point. I know you've listed the stallion, but from an eventing point of view, particularly, the whole pedigree is of more interest.

This is the whole point of the WBFSH books, by the way. They are not just birth certificate registries, they are data collection services. So, regardless of the book of birth - which is often down to convenience/location - you can track the genetic material that went into the horse and how that material has performed.
 
The mare is registerred as a sports horse. The youngster is homebred, and the owner sold the mare, but still keeps in regular contact with the new owner, who is eventing her at BE90/100 level.
 
Well its simple then if you like the horse buy it. A correctly produced horse can turn its hoof to anything. And Rubin Star has offspring eventing. Good luck and have fun:):)

my Oldenburg is lovely, great breeding, good looks and lovely movement and a huge jump. He is also not dainty so he will end up eventing if i have my way :D he doesn't know it yet!!

Although mine is very intelligent which is not a good trait!! Very quick to learn all sorts of naughty things!!

If you like the horse then go for it!! They are virtually warmbloods anyways!
 
We have an Oldenburg stallion at work.

He is a sweetie, full of character. He is the boss of the yard and makes sure everyone knows it. He is the first to say hi in the morning when you arrive.

Movement wise, he is stunning. Is at Prix St George/Inter 1 level and is still quite young. He is by Royal Olymp out of Desiree and has dressage lines. He can jump, but he doesn't enjoy it. Here he is under saddle http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xAOED_8wmQ

He is very athletic and has scope to burn, far more than I will ever use. He pops 1.50 like its a x pole.

He is a Indoctro horse and they are known for their huge jump

NaeNae87 and Ludoctro - Both such stunning horses! I wish my dutch warmblood moved like that haha!

I was looking at a rising 4yo out of Indoctro, that has just started jumping small poles, but I think I am wanting to go down the breaking in and training a horse, instead of bring one on to event! Such hard decisions! My warmblood is out of work at the moment and we are not sure what is going on with him :( so getting the unbroken gelding it may be a case of no competiting the rest of this year if my eventer doesn't come right! :(

Just want to say thanks to everyone who helped me make me decision and commented on this post. He arrived on Saturday, and I am so shocked at how well he has settled in to his new home! :)
 
My horse has an Oldenburg sire. He has an amazing trot and a wonderful temperament but is a scaredy cat. He is the boss horse but would burst into tears if i shouted at him
And yes, they jump. Lots of luck.
 
You have to put them either in your album on here or something like photobucket, and then post a link.

Easiest is open an album on here (on your user cp page), download the image, then it will give you the codes to paste into your post. But if you already have them uploaded to Photobucket, Picasa or similar they should already have codes attached.
 
Kerrileigh glad you bought him I have a mare Temple Corade sire Gran Corrado Dam is Marley, she won money jumping as a young horse and did very well, I have had her 3 years I don't jump so she does in hand showing and a bit under saddle now, she is the most gentle horse I have ever known and very easy going, great movement and a pleasure to own, I would put some pictures on but I also have no idea how to do it;), good luck with your new horse.
