Opinions on the horse please (pretty please)

You could try a wanted to lease ad in H&H, contact yards that have junior BSJA riders direct and ask, check pony club website or advertise there. The only drawback is that people who are leasing out extremely good quality ponies would expect to see good competition results in a potential jockey - their pony has a value and reputation to maintain, after all

At this stage taking on a pony that is going to be quickly outgrown is a recipe for heartbreak when you have to sell it on, but a loan or lease is with you for a fixed term.

Thanks Tia - I will bear that in mind. I would love to get one for that price - but I don't think I have the experience to spot an opportunity when I see it (in fact I know I don't).

Buy me a ticket and I'll come over and help you!

Seriously though, there must be someone on here who might be able to go and view some horses with you? If you spot one in Ontario just shout and I'll be on my way.

I just wish I knew more - I hate not have the knowledge to make decisions - I am not used to it. It's not that we don't love the horses we have - we do. We bought Biggles knowing he was an in between horse (as in not a permanent one). But we probably rushed at it and certainly paid too much.

Ebony was the girls first pony and we have had her for two years - and they love her and want to keep her forever. But there is no point in trying to force her to do things she is too spooky to do.

I don't want to buy something too old - because if we want to sell it on - I want to think we can find a good home for it. There are some lovely looking ponies - like this one

http://www.pcuk.org/cgi-bin/view_classified.cgi?7001

but she's 13.

What do you think of this one?

The second one would tick all of my boxes!

You'd be looking at selling her as a 10 year old which is still a good age. I would say she was a teensy bit overpriced, but who knows it does say that she has competed BSJA, so maybe not. Anything that is proven will be around this sort of ballpark though - see I'm a skinflint, I buy them before they get anywhere

.

I'm not that keen on the first PUK one.....but that pony looks awfully familiar to me; might not be but if it was the one I knew then it was a fanastic little pony.

I'll have a lookie in a little while - I have to go and check on my chicken which is smelling delicious on the BBQ.

Oh no don't say that - I'm going to a BBQ next Friday!!

Have you looked on Horse Quest? They have a "Show Jumping Ponies" section. Seen a few nice ones in the BSJA section!

was just looking on horse deals myself, i must be getting old or something when i brought my first horse he was 14.2 coloured he was only 750 pound and done everything jumped like a stag and couldnt be beaten against the clock, won loads with him to the extent they didnt want me at the local shows anymore lol lol !! why are ponys so expensive these days !!!! i love coloureds just think there great, look in the coloured section !

I second horse quest for SJ ponies! I've just had a quick look and there are quite a few on there...

On the BSJA pony page there's a few 148's that i think would do the job, some are overpriced but just scrolling down the page ive seen a few that look quite nice and reasonably priced, plus would be able to help your daughter out.

I think you should go for something with a bit of experience....and if you only plan to keep it for a while i cant see you loosing too much money if the horse is a little older - there is always a market for 'been there, done it' type SJers (especially true for ponies!). Otherwise i'd go down the lease route, but to be honest - i think you'll have trouble finding a lease.

hmm.
i personally like the pony.
everyone is going on about how it stands, it neck width and so but really you cant tell what its going to be like just from a photo!
try the pony, you obviously dont mind travelling to it so what have you got to lose?
my ja pony was an arab x welsh chesnut mare who ran around with her nose in the air and was scatty, but i jumped all the kraiburgs at 1.30 on her so she did her job.
this is an ad for a pony at my yard. cant get the pic up though

I am not very keen on the first one. Not enough experience for the price and for what your girls want to do. It does rather sound like they are going for whatever they see in case you change your mind! I rather liked the 12 year old that I think the Watcher pointed out. That looked to be a much nicer type for the money.

Yes - Abby is quite slight - and only 15 - she wants to do a year or so of junior BSJA before having to face senior.

Shame I'm a fair way from you, got a cheapo 9 yr old 14.1hh dun pony whos a fab little jumper, done some BSJA before and ready to go on.
I dont think you should have to pay that much money to get something fairly ordinary, got to stand out a bit!

Nuala, for a budget of £6k, which is no small sum, I wouldn't go see anything that hadn't won money/competed regularly BSJA. That would be my personal preference if I had a daughter that wanted to start competing in juniors. I would also be happy to look at anything up to 15 years old, an experienced pony could teach your daughter an awful lot, and they tend to go on for years. I don't like the first pony or the palomino, but like the first 2 chestnuts and want the connie x tb
blush.gif
, don't think you'd lose money on the connie x tb either, except for a competition horse, many people prefer geldings. Best of luck..
