Hi

Am in the process of changing my car and after a very tiring day yesterday have whittled it down to a choice of 2.

So our final choices are:
Range Rover - not the sport just a normal diesel (3 litre i think),automatic, on an 02 plate. Is right at the top of our budget but really smart to look at, mileage is quite reasonable, has all the gadgets and obviously brilliant to tow with. Husband is concerned about the fact we have a very tight driveway and I am prone to scratching the freelander I have now!

2nd choice is a Mitsubishi Shogun 03 plate, long wheelbase, diesel again I think 3.2 litres but on a manual this time. This again has reasonable mileage and is £3K cheaper than the range rover! It has an even bigger boot than the rangie which with 3 dogs, one a GSD is a big plus and has the extra 2 seats which could be useful. This one is a more basic model but has a/c and leather which is all I am worried about as far as luxuries go! Now my concern with this is that I have heard they are bad to tow with? Does anyone have any experience of this?

I will be towing an ifor 505 with 2 450kg horses and I do have the correct licence as I am getting on a bit!

Now as a precursor to further suggestions particularly about landrovers my husband is a landrover geek being the chairman of a 4x4 response team and a very popular forum so we know all about discoveries and defenders. We actually have a 90 but it is my husbands toy and is always broken! And we would love a D3 but they are slightly out of our price range and not interested in the one before (mainly down to looks - very shallow me!)

So if anyone has any experience or opinions on the above I would be really keen to hear them!

Thanks lots :)

Hubs came home with a VERY big Disco last night :D Our Freelander just could not tow - it struggled with the trailer, let alone a horse in the trailer.

It's so huge, it's the same size as the Transporter van next to it - how the hell am I going to park it ???

Hehe Shysmum we used to have a disco and I actually think you'll find it easier to park than you think as you can see everything really well being high up.

My freelander is actually ok to tow one horse but I have sold my old rice and am buying an ifor with my friend so need a car I can take both our horses in.

My freelander is 12 years old and looks it I am sure when I have a shiny, beautiful rangie I will take much more care to avoid the tree in the middle of the drive ;)

Lol, my trailer is an old Rice one !! I am sure that now we have pulling power, I'll be asked to give lifts - let me see, price per mile anyone ?

I am very biased towards Land Rover products but have you checked on both:

MPG
Service intervals/costs
Costs/availbility of day to day spare parts
Insurance
Tyre availabilty/price
Official towing capacity
Reviews on towing (caravan club website?)
Owners views (again forums) on what can go wrong and costs when it goes wrong eg electronic failures

This may all sway you towards a final decision

I will be towing an ifor 505 with 2 450kg horses and I do have the correct licence as I am getting on a bit!
You need a towing capacity of 2000+ to allow for a few extras in the trailer
Empty trailer plus 2 x 450 kg horses = about 1800 kgs

How about a Pajero? Japanese version of the Shogun and you get a lot more for your money. Normally have less mileage and barely any rust/salt damage if you get a fairly new import as Japan down grit the roads.
I had a short wheel base, 2.8 petrol and that thing could tow! It pulled my friends Ifor trailer with 15.2 and tack etc no worries and also towed my now ex's 21ft power boat with absolute ease! Insurance isn't normally that much more compared to a UK model and parts/servicing etc are not an issue either!

A Kia Sorrento is fab. I have one. Tows my equitrek with 2 up without a murmur. Good value for your money as well.

Thanks all some really useful advice there I will take this all into account when making my decision.

Lippyx I have thought about a pajero but my husband said because it is an import insurance would be more. However as the shogun is cheaper than the range rover on the quotes I have had it might be worth a look.

Rog - the range rover is 3.5 tonnes and the shogun is 3.3 so I am pretty sure both are ok?

Thanks again :)

We had the exact same RR but just traded it in for 3.6 twin turbo diesel, we did it because we felt the 3ltr was underpowered for our 510 with two large horses as we have some beefy hills to get up.
