If you have read previous posts of mine you will know that I have been having a few probs with my horse when jumping. He is incredibly fresh and accelerates off all over the place. I have been working on an exercise suggested by someone on here that is helping, jumping and then stopping between two cones a certain number of paces after the jump. Have also been doing canter poles in a large circle (as corners seem to get him really excited), have also left the jumps out in the ring whilst working him so he does not get over excited when he sees them. Do you think the canter poles and leaving jumps out etc, are useful exercises to help him? I think they are, but would like some of your expert opinions please.

recently when i have been going for riding lessons my horse has become extrememly excited, not settling down for about 1hour
we stoppped jumping there for a bit, and now he is really good, as long as we have some "flatwork" lessons and some mixed..

All sounds good stuff. Another good exercise to try is, as you come into the approach of a jump and you can feel him getting ready to tank, turn him onto a circle. He'll stop anticipating and start listening to you - just because he can see the jump doesn't mean he will be jumping it. Concentrate on rythym and balance - when he starts to pick up speed put him back on a circle, collect him a little , really feel that he is working from behind, then allow him forward to take the next jump, always maintaining a good rythym and keeping him light in your hand.

sounds good. i would also try lots of very small x poles at different paces. trot walk and canter. as said above, lots of bending, circles ect to get him listning. lots of trasitions, aproach in canter but do some downwards transitions so you end up trotting over them. all in all, make sure he is working and listening and youll be fine. good luck and keep us updated!

This sounds good, I will try it. Its one of the problems we have as he is fighting so hard against me, I am hard on the reins pulling him back trying to get some control.
