Hi all!

I’m normally just a browser on here reading other people posts but at the moment I am looking to replace my Stubben saddle (too long for horse) with another jumping/event saddle. I have an idea what I want but not sure what will fit!

I need a 17” medium wide forward cut jumping saddle that doesn’t weigh a ton when it has stirrups attached. I have been searching eBay for ages and today I noticed two saddles that have caught my eye.

One is a Thorowgood T6 Robert Whitaker jumping saddle and the other is an Amerigo Vega monoflap saddle. I am also going to try an Equipe synergy jumping saddle tomorrow. Does anyone have any of these saddles? What do you think of them?
Truth be told, I much prefer the Vega monoflap but I am apprehensive about buying without trying!

Thanks in advance for your opinions 

Can you try these type of saddles on your horse before buying?

You say you are trying an Equipe - at least if this fits, you will know the Amerigo Vega will fit as all by the same manufacturer

Also is the T6 synthetic? If so have you ridden on a synthetic before? I bought a wintec and really didn't like the synthetic feel

I have just bought an Equipe Expression saddle and have to say so far I love it. It was the first saddle that I have bought in 12 years and so was very wary as I love my old Cliff Barnsby Ginny legg event saddle (going to be kept for the youngsters coming on).

So if you like the Equipe, then you should like the Amerigo. I think Katb has also just bought an Equipe (Iirc).

Oh I didn’t know the Equipe was similar to the Amerigo. – That’s interesting!

I’ve rode in a synthetic saddle on my other horse last week and really liked it!

Unfortunately, I cannot try the eBay saddles as I am in Ireland and they are located over in the UK.

I am also in Ireland - got my saddle through Annaghmore saddlery when I was at Tyrella eventing a few weeks ago.

what part of Ireland are you in? I have to say that I find we really don't have a great range/choice of saddles available over here - but that is just my opinion.

I am in 2 minds about synthetic saddles - my mare hated the dressage one I tried on her and deep down I do like leather saddles/tack (brown only!).

Also, my Equipe is very light - one of the things that attracted me the the saddle in the first place.

Based in Kildare. I agree, there are very few places to go to try 2nd hand saddles!

I personally prefer leather saddles but I am just so sick of trying to find something to fit her, I’ll take anything!!

I’m wondering now if I should get the synthetic saddle at the cheaper price and be able to adjust it to her as she grows (she’s only 5) and then save a bit for a leather saddle at a stage when she wont be changing size so much?

I know of two saddlers in northern ireland who are very good and have a large selection of 2nd hand saddles to try. But it may be too far for you/them to travel (I am Louth - so not too bad).

As you say - it may be worth getting a synthetic until she has finished growing.

I can't think of any good saddlers in the Kildare/Midlands area - there are plenty of tack shops but few who do a good range of saddles.

Good luck with the saddle hunt - it can be a nightmare! I am now on the search for the dressage saddle (in brown!)

at least if this fits, you will know the Amerigo Vega will fit as all by the same manufacturer

Doesn't follow. Saddles of even similar styles by the same manufacturer do not both necessarily fit the same horse.

With saddles you really must try before you buy.

Hi there, I am in Carlow and I have used Goodwin Saddlery in Dublin 01 8213047, they have a qualified and highly experienced fitter who will fill his jeep up with sadddles and come to you. I found him excellent and as a result sold my Stubben Seigfreid MF Special and bought a second hand Albion K2 jumping saddle which I looove! My mare has a gentle nature and is now 9 years old but I never won anything until now, every weekend since I bought the K2 I have been placed even winning a working hunter championship!! The change in her is unbelieveable, gone from choppy to floating! Not only was the Stubben too narrow but she loves the extra Gussets the K2 has. He has reccomended a Wintec Isabell Dressage saddle which I am on the look out for second hand! Good luck :-)

Have you tried Holmestead? If you ring in advance, there is one lady who works in there who is very knowledgeable and helpful when it comes to saddle fitting. You can bring your horse and ride in any saddles you think may be suitable; they have a good selection both new and secondhand.

I second the vote for Goodwins! they are fabulous and very very good fitters! I wouldn't use anyone else
