Opinions on this fetlock please.

Hi all,

Keep this short. Horse was perfectly sound previous night and come out of the stable lame in the morning with a swollen leg. This video was taken later in the day once swelling had been walked off. No cuts or obvious signs of trauma to the area and no obvious heat in the leg. Never had this issue with the leg before and always been sound.

What could do you think could be the issue?

(Side note, have spoken to vet just looking for further opinions).

Maybe he could have banged it and it was just a bit of bruising or possibly might be a build up of odemea from being stood in the stable but this doesn't usually cause lameness. My boy can get that sometimes.

I'm not really concerned about the swelling he can get that when stood in. It's the popping action of the back fetlock which isn't normal.
 
I have just re watched your video and I can see what you mean. I have not come across this before, would be interested to know what it is, what did your vet say?
 
I'm not a vet but I think it might be a partial subluxation of the fetlock joint. I have to stress I am only guessing but if you watch the you tube video below it shows a horse with similar. Subluxation is a condition that occurs when a joint begins to dislocate (at its very early stage). Instead of the joint surfaces completely losing contact, a subluxation occurs which is another name for a partial dislocation. A subluxation is often the result of a traumatic or acute injury so I'm guessing he went a bit mad in the field last night. I'd get the vet out pronto in case I am right.

I think treatment is usually box rest and anti inflammatories.

Thanks for the replies guys.

He's actually got an abcess to the bulb of his heel and as such hasn't wasn't to put full weight on the heel causing the jerk movement of the fetlock as he finally puts enough weight on it to land on the hoof fully.
 
That's good news then.

I asked a physio yesterday for her thoughts and she agreed with what I thought. Glad its nothing too serious then!
