Hello guys,

A friend of mine is horse hunting at the moment with a small budget. She's just looking for a small horse with potential to be a RC type all rounder.

She is interested in the below horse and I wondered if you experienced lot would appraise the ad for me and give me your opinions on both the horse and the advertised price.

much appreciated

I think she is ringing up about him tonight.
Would be lovely if something worked out as she lost her 18 year old superstar 14.2 a few months ago to colic and has been pretty miserable ever since.

PS yes vettings are a must, always! xx

The owner is mad letting him go on trial. Apart from that i would say he seems a bit cheap with all his tack. Worth looking at though, the advert appears genuine to me.

He's lovely and a real honest ad. I had my horse on trial worked out fine. At least you know its been offered so they have nothing to hide. My horse was reasonably priced it doesn't always mean something is wrong with him/her. Please let us know how your friend gets on.

I don't think it's mad letting him go on trial... we sent my old pony on trial as it was so important to me that the home was right for him

The way i see it is that if someone is serious about buying a horse they wont mind coming back numerous times to try it. The seller can also get references and do a home/yard check.

Letting a horse on trial is open to all manor of problems. Firstly, most horses get unsettled moving, so behaviour isnt always a true representation of the horse. The horse is just coming to terms with a new routine, surroundings, human communication and equine company. How many posts do you see on here about people having problems with their new horse? Loads! Theyve either rushed into buying it or the horse needs time to settle. A trial wont make any difference above going to see the horse several times.

Secondly, what happens if the horse is injured/gets ill when on trial. Who owns the horse if it can no longer do what it did before or is damaged in some way? Que lots of arguments!

Thirdly, the trialer may feed/train/ride/look after the horse in a way that changes the horse for the worse, temporarily or permanently. Then hand the horse back and leave the owner to sort it out.

Fourthly, if a trial doesnt work, even for a genuine reason, i consider it unfair for a horse to be moved about, potentially going on another trial and so on. Ultimately it is the horse that suffers.

So to me, trials are fraught with problems that are just not worth it. In particular for the welfare of the horse and hassle to the owner. As i said before, genuine buyers and sellers wouldnt mind numerous visits to make sure the horse is the right one for them. That way at least the horse has continuity of care and is given a chance.

I presume your friend is very experienced?? I also hope she has experience of Welsh cobs!!! He sounds a very very typical welsh. Owner has been honest without painting a clear picture................In that when she says he needs a firm handler on the ground...she really means it, he will need someone who is always one step ahead of him or he will take advantage and very soon will be dragging and barging new owner all over the place. He will be perfectly behaved when you view him as owner has him sussed and he knows and respects it.

I expect you have guess I have had a few WC's in my time and if your friend is looking for a horse she can relax around then this isn't one. However he is lovely and sounds like in the right hands he will be a star

I once loaned one and told people what he was like, when they viewed him he was really good and did all that was asked perfectly. I told them he will do xyz and you need to do abc.....as he was so sweet and cuddly they did not listen and 3 times he was sent back by people that thought I had lost the plot when they viewed, only to send him back saying he was dangerous...............YEAH right he now is with a new mom and has taught all her young children to ride..................just because she listened to me and did what I said So it can work out just great

Hi soulful thanks for the advice I will certainly pass it along. Her sister used to own a welsh cob I think.

She's definitely experienced enough to take on a project with additional help on hand (and tbh I think that's all she could expect for her budget).
Provided there's not a nasty streak there I think it would be fine but will advise caution.

Much appreciated xx
