Following on from 'what would you do?' i thought i would put a pic up of him. What do you think? anything that jumps out good or bad?
Don't know a great deal about him yet, just that he is 4, doing well under saddle, has a nice pop on him, nice nature, it's just the problem with the noise he makes which apparently has been decribed like he has asthma!

I have no idea, but i will find out and if i like him in person get a vet to check him over, all i have to go on at the moment is what i have said

I wouldn't buy something that makes a noise - plenty out there don't - and you may find he will only be a field ornament without a hobday/tieback operation (expensive and some risks)
 
i know a pony who has this problem. Only she roars instead of wheezing. The vet said it was perhaps a sligh dust allergy that hardly bothers her as she lives out. But it has no effect on her other than the noise.
 
Isn't asthma COPD? Had a horse on our yard with it and he had a nebuliser that you had to pop over his nostrils and squirt when he'd been in work. I always thought it was a bit of pain to take it everywhere, they even took it on hacks. It looked like an oxygen mask with a wide rigid tube, so a bit cumbersome to tote about when riding. Never bothered the horse mind you and he never got ant worse.
 
Lots of opinions on the fact that he makes a noise which is great and very helpful to hear your experiences, but do you think the horse is nice enough to take a chance on, or still steer clean because of the noise?
 
I think he looks sweet but I'm afraid the noise would put me off depending on the cause. If it is noticable in light 'backing' work then what would it be like under hard work when he is older.... depends what you want him for I guess.
 
I wouldn't want any horse, esp. a young one, with a potential wind problem... As my old YO says "It costs as much to keep a good one as it does a bad one".....
 
That is very true, it was one of those moments when you looked at him and seen something you really quite liked, heart ruling head as per usual

Didn't see yr previous posts - looks a nice horse and if you like him may be worth having him endoscoped and blood tested to find out what exactly is the problem? If it makes a 'noise' a scope will identify the extent of paralysis - if slight may not matter if youre mainly going to do dressage. Some young horses have nodules that they grow out of. If its COPD you need to think about management issues - may not be an issue for dressage but you would need to keep him on dust free regimen so this should reflect in cost.
 
I may be going against the grain but I would suggest that you look at him seriously if you really like him otherwise but make sure you get a 5* vetting before handing over any money. I think he looks like a really nice horse. Sometimes it is a temporary thing as they grow up or the yard may have dusty hay.
 
If he's 4 and making a noise I'd leave him well alone.

There's loads of 4 yr olds out there that don't make a noise...........
 
I suppose it depends what they are asking for him.

He looks like a nice type from the photo - if he's everything you're looking for in all other ways and they've discounted the price to reflect the noise/allery issue then it might be worth a punt.
 
He looks nice from that pic. as others have said, if COPD I wouldn't touch. But when does he make a noise? I had one horse that was noisy at canter and the vet said it was totally normal to the horse - the horse was a high breather (or something like that) and not roaring, copd or any other nasty. So if you like him, get him vetted ?

If you are really interested in him, I would find out what the 'noise' is about. If it's COPD, walk away. If it's what is known as 'roaring' it means one side of the larynx is paralysed and cannot open properly - this requires an expensive operation (hobday or tie-back), so not a good idea.

If it's something much less serious and more easily managed, then he might be worth considering, although there are plenty of equally nice 4yos out there that are sound!

(atwork I think the term you are looking for is 'high-blower'. High-blowing is more of a snorty noise, and as you say definitely not an indication of unsoundness!)

) so I'm guessing some owners do worry about it

Do BD define making a noise or roaring as an unsoundness, I can't re-call seeing anything in the rules about it, but if your interested in dressage then I would look into that first.
He does look at nice sort though - would have caught my eye too!
 
Sometimes a lot f young horses make a noise but it is not significant. they can get tight in their jowls and it shows up then.... the only sure way to know is to have the horse scoped. Don't forget a lot of noises aer also due to unfitness and when fit the noise abates. Don't write off just yet if you like him.
