Hi,she looks lovely.I only own mare's since I feel I relate more to them, they say ask a mare, tell a gelding, negociate with a stallion. And I have found this to be very true.I have a marish mare and It can be a real pain, however if you understand her and learn to deal with it,then you could have a very succsesfull partnership. It all depends on how she feels when you get on her,if you have more than 2 doubts, then dont be afraid to leave her,the right horse will come along.
Good luck

My main concern would be that due to the time of year you would be unable to get a true picture of her problems until the spring.

that is my concern too, I think from what they said when she is in season she is best ignored but has been much better the last couple of season on a stroppy mare supplement, but that was just out in the field. I think something like regumate would be best for her though, owner was very honest about it

But do you really want the hassle of regumate and all the care you have to take with it (need to be v careful handling it as it can make you infertile)?
Just because a horse is quirky does not mean it is talented, and anyone who tells you all the really good horses are quirky is forgetting to tell you that sometimes the quirks don't have to be ridden, which is a hell of a lot easier on you when you are trying to work up through the grades for fun...
I think she is smart, but I also think that having been to the BYEH finals if she was really all that and all it would take is regumate then for that price do you not think one of the pros who saw her at BYEH would have snapped her up?? She'd easily make a quick profit if all was going to take was some regumate....
Sorry - sounds horribly negative but you have the chance now to find a truely fun replacement for J and I don't think you should rush into anything just because you want something quickly IYSWIM? My horse is easy as pie to ride, anyone half decent can ride him, his quirks are in the stable, so I have a heck of a lot more fun with him, and have got a lot further than I ever did with my mare who was doubtless talented but a b1tch to ride....just something to think on I guess.
When she isnt in season she is easy as pie to ride, jumps like a stag and does a lovely test. Just seems a good way of getting something good for not alot of money as she obviously wants to sell.

Aparently the finals didnt go so well....

Gosh, did the owner tell you that, fancy....
Do you not think if the finals didn't go well but the pros thought it was easy as regumate and some training to fix then at that price they'd have snapped her up?!
Just giving you another view....*whispers subliminal messages to MH to be more cynical*
Look at it another way - you cannot try her when she is in season, they will only give you a weeks trial, just as the event season starts you may find she is totally impossible, at which point you are back to square one - funny how she is for sale now it is winter, isn't it?
I think buying something from someone who is overhorsed is one thing, buying something which has issues and someone good enough to get it to the BYEH finals hasn't managed to fix them is quite another...
Of course as MDM said on another thread I could be rubbishing the winner of Badminton 2012 here....
Just doesnt seem likely I will find anything like J for the money I have
[/ QUOTE ]
I think more accurately, you won't find anything like J quickly for the money you have, and probably not by trawling the conventional ads...
You need to put it out of your head that J was a potential 4* horse and instead remember he was a PN horse who was trying at the best of times and hospitalised you at the worst. Now see how much easier it is to find something which can jump PN and has the scope to go N and intermediate without spending a fortune...and how much easier it is to find one better than J was...
You will do yourself no favours remembering J through rose-tinted glasses as the best horse you ever had - I think he will be the one who taught you the most but ultimately I think your next one will take you further, far, far quicker and less painfully (emotionally and literally!) than J did.
Sorry, this may be out of order but why do you want something like J? Given he gave you many issues and ups and downs?
Do you really want a horse that people are advising you to just do dressage with?
At the end of the day if you have a certain amount of money you have to look in that budget, 5K is plenty to find something ready to go out and do PN with a winters work.
I would agree with Spotted Cat.
I am the first to admit he was a complete a**e most of the time, but he just gave you such an amazing feel that you forgave the bad bits. Just want to find something that gives me something similar (although preferably without the naughty bit)
When I first got B it was off the back of my mare who was talented but impossible to ride. I thought I'd never find anything as good as him ever again.
Now I've been to lots of clinics and spent 3 seasons on the circuit I've realised there are a hell of a lot of nice horses worth having out there, and mine is just one of a huge number, so ultimately, if something should happen to him (god forbid), I have no doubt at all he is replaceable, and I know what I am looking for now. Don't kid yourself into thinking J is the only talented horse you will ever have who gives you that feeling XC. He's not. I guarantee you if I sat you on mine you'd say the same about him, and I bet there are 10 or 20 like him owned by forum members.
Personally I wouldn't go and see the mare, but it's your call. I think with a bit more looking you'll find something good out there which is just as bold XC - these horses are not as rare as we'd like to believe.
Your right I know, just wish they were easier to find, you dont want to sell yours do you?
I wont bother with her, too risky and think I am a bit too trusting of what people say... thats why this place is great as you get loads of different opinions to help make your mind up
Sadly you are momentarily too late as he is off out on loan for the first six months of next year so you could have had him to event for a few months whilst you kept your eyes open for something! Sorry! And I'm afraid he'd be a bit more than £5K now (although not much, the swine bit me this evening!).
The girl who is having him is very excited though, which is nice (and she rides better than me and I will be SPITTING if she gets points on him before I do!) .
Seriously, I think there is something fun and talented out there and as Boss has proved, the right rider can go from nothing to Intermediate in 2 seasons, so don't rule out one which hasn't done much, it's not terribly hard to get the right horse to PN relatively quickly.
I realise I have entered this conversation a little late but am just wondering what you are looking for? I have a little eventing chap that I ned to sell with enthusiasm and sharpness but not the mareishness obviously! Not sure what your looking for though as cant open original web address but if your still looking for something then let me know!
I agree totally SC - horses don't have to be tricky to be talented, quirky often, but difficult no. The mare in question sounds like a bit of a nightmare to be honest.
There are plenty of talented horses out there, often very green and uneducated, at reasonable prices. Especially if you are willing to be flexible on other factors - vices, how they are to handle, size etc. but I don't think that taking on something that has proven difficult for a pro rider is often sensible - something that has been difficult for a novice is a different scenario altogether...
good luck though - I am sure you will find something fantastic (and hopefully straightforwards too!)
If this horse was any good she would have been snapped up long ago... Why do you want a sharp horse? To compete well you need something that you can work with, not against! By the sound of it you have had alot of dodgy sharp ones, get yourself a good natured one, which will win for you!
Its an absolute buyers market at the moment, you should get something nice with your budget, dont BUY another problem, if you want a horse like the one you have explained, you should be able to get it for free....
She does look very nice but personally I wouldnt touch something that napped even if it is only when in season, what happens if you do well with her then on an important competition day she comes into season?
We have tried regumate and sometimes it does work however sometimes it doesnt so I wouldnt rely on it. If she was fit and we were coming into spring i would think she would be worth having to see how bad she is, however she is unfit and not likely to come into season for a fair few months so personally I wouldn't go and see her.
SC is right there are horses out there that give you that feel XC and I think Mine is one of them, they are out there. Although I didnt event him with BE until he was 8 at 7 I did the PC horse trials with him (novice level) after owning him 2 years from just backed, and he flew around. He cost me far far less than 5k. so they are out there, keep looking as it is a buyers market you will find something suitable eventually.
She does look very nice, I had a friend that had a trak he was amazing very quick learner and turned his hoof to anything only thing he didnt like was hacking alone!
You will probably find part of the reason she is for sale now is because she will have shut down for the winter and will not come into season now until next spring, so you would not know how bad she is going to be until next year when it will be the eventing season again.
As others have said there are going to be a lot of horses dropping significantly in price now, so you should be able to pick up a nice horse for sensible money. Quirky is fine, but hormonal and difficult is not so much fun, plus you could end up with a horse that everyone knows is not easy that is only worth broodmare money whereas if you bought a more straightforward horse and it turned out to be not good enough it would be saleable for more than you got it for.
Also entering this conversation very late....my mare can nap like buggery as I've found out twice this season. However now I know she can do it I've *touchwood* since found a contingency plan and we're back on track and I wouldn't swap her for the world (well maybe a Galaxy and a pack of pork scratchings).
I've not had a mare before this one (apart from when I was a kid) so not totally au fait with their seasons, but mine was in season last week........
If you are still considering, pm me the seller as I may know them.
And as an aside, can you compete legally on regumate (not you personally obviously!)
