I had a couple of horses arrived on the farm yesterday morning, the owner has come down and said sorry and is fixing the fencing so they'll be staying an extra night.. anyway we got chatting and he said he was thinking of selling this little filly.

She's rising 3, 3/4 trotter, done a little lunging with her. This afternoon I had a play, Ive had her trotting up, put rugs on her, bit in her mouth, picked feet, flexion test, chased her over a little jump... Im not sure about her action from behind, she steps over well, but im undecided I feel like she might flick out slightly... She seems lovely, not once bucked or kicked, so a nice temp. Anyway popped some pics up and trying to upload a video to youtube of her trotting in the field... ignore my stupid video voice and my VERY pooey yard, I havent swept up yet today

I dont know, there's just something I can put my finger on... Also what would you pay ;)

There's something about her, isn't there? I like her and it would be nice for her to get a good start in life rather than sold to someone unknown.

Well umm, the usual reasons check for an unlevelness, unsoundness, especially as I feel her back legs might, 'kick out' slightly, I wanted to check to see if there is any sign of pressure being put them already in her young age

x

Did you manage to make he lame then? Looking at that video I can see that she is not sound behind, without exacabating the problem with a flexion test. I personally hate flexion tests, especially on a young horse.

No I didnt make her lame... but i wasnt sure about her soundness behind hence why I did the flexion test.

Why dont you like flexion tests and why not in youngsters?

I dont think that they prove anything, at worse they can make a small problem a bigger problem, I think that they are an out dated method of testing a horses soundness. With a FT you are ostensibly making a horse lame for at least 2 or 3 strides. In most cases, including this filly, it is obvious that there is a problem so why confirm it with a FT.

Oh right, do you know if there's any good recent articles etc on flexion tests?

Be interesting to read what investigations into them have shown.

So would you be tempted to buy or let her pass by? She's sweet but, if your confirming what I think I can see too she's not going to be much use to anyone as a riding pony.

I like her, she's compact and appears kind natured, but she is very straight in the stifle, her feet need sorting, no biggy. I wouldn't offer more than £400, but then I'm not the one who is starting to fall in with love her;):D

If she isn't able to make a riding pony then you could always sell her as a brood mare. ;)

Maybe post a better video so we can see whats going on a bit clearer? I can't really have a good look at her movement as the video is so jumpy.

As for articles I dont know to be honest, I have offered my opinion on FT through experience and common sense, perhaps google? As for this filly, she is young and I find it hard to advise you, I was seeing just a very short video. To me the action of any trotters or trotter crosses never look good enough to be riding horses. I am sure there will be millions of people on here to tell you otherwise! If I was going to invest in a youngster, soundness would be the most important factor and I wouldnt put my money in her if there is the slightest doubt.

I think the winky face meant she was joking?

I do like her, as you say OP there is something about her. Would like to see a better video though, the vid is too jumpy to judge her action properly.

Ooo whilst we are waiting for my other video of Penny... that's her name... This is my old mare Clover.. Miss her tons, she had to have colic surgery but ended up with an infection which meant another operation and the vets said it was better to PTS :( but was going through my videos so thought I would post it..

You already have a doubt in the back of your mind, especially that there might be something wrong.. If I were you I'd pass her by and keep an eye out for another which will suit your needs better with no obvious problems. There are plenty about these days, hate to put a downer on the thread as she does look like an utter sweetheart but personally wouldn't risk the possible vets bills from her legs :)
