Hi, my friend is looking for a pony to buy. She likes Fell or Dales types as she's only short in height and thinks they're about the right build for her.

She asked me what I think of this advert she'd spotted. I suggested I post it here and get some feedback from members here, as I'm not expert enough to be confident in my opinion. She wondered if the price is about right or rather high? Also what people think of his conformation and description. She hasn't phoned about him yet, she's still not sure.

Thankyou to anyone who gives feedback on behalf of my friend. :)

I don't know much about horse adverts and what's right etc..
However, I think 'Sammy' looks lovely and well worth the £1800! But that's just my opinion, i'd wait for other people to comment and over advice :p

There are no conformation pictures so can't say anything about confo but he certainly looks like a very genuine horse and I think the price is good if he is as easy going as seller says. If him being strong is his only drawback then providing your friend is a capable rider then I'd say he's got to be worth a closer look.

Nice pony, the sort of thing I'd consider for myself. Fell ponies aren't ten a penny like welshies so they do command a bit more - seems fair to me pricewise, though of course there's always haggling to be done.

I can only think that I have ridden one fell pony and he was indeed strong... but if your friend is used to ponies I'm sure she'll know what to expect.

Can't judge conformation from those photos, don't like the jumping picture but think its an unfortunate picture .
I am concerned in the ad about the bit about being in the stable with a friend if it where me I would be sure to check that he's sensible alone in the stable.

Sounds like a dealer to me masquerading as a private person selling for a friend. I would be very cautious, something about the add doesn't sound right. Looks like quite a nice type, sounds strong, possibly nappy so test him out thoroughly.

I hate these photos people put on of them dangling off / standing on / generally irritating ponies, personally... but that aside, I still like the pony.

Fell ponies up here are 10 a penny, youngstock are virtually worthless. I think for a novice a Dales pony has a much nicer temperament as Fells can be stubborn and have a short and choppy action. Hugely overpriced as well.

Having had Fell ponies as an adolescent - yes, they are lovely all rounders, and on a good day will perform as if they were two hands higher, have endless energy and manners to burn; but, ime, if they dont feel like doing something - they can indicate this quite clearly, and if necessary, repetitively! Think price not too bad, with a bit of haggling. Conformation reflects growing /maturing/fittening still to do - I hope. "Cheeky" = rude/tries it on? "Prefers company" to hack out = needs confident consistent firm rider as quite green? Nice project, but don't think the prospective purchaser should expect a "made" pony, and should expect to put in quite a bit of work for a couple of years bringing him on. Would be, potentially, very good.

Thanks for all your answers. Lots for my friend to read when I show her this tomorrow. She is a fairly capable rider and used to quite naughty ponies so I don't think his being strong will put her off.

Justabob, my friend thought he was very dear too. She said it looked a lot of money for a pony which may not have done a lot. That might put her off contacting them, I don't know. She says he seems to have only just come on the market so she might wait and see if the price comes down as she's a bit shy of haggling.

A good summary.

Can someone less shy go with her to do the haggling? Personally, I always advertise for more than I want on the basis that people will haggle and I think most people do the same.

Lol!!! I agree with you, I hate that sort of photo . I suppose they are trying to show how calm he is but it does look silly . :p It's an awful one of the pony too.

I will show my friend all these other ads and photos too, thank you everyone.

Yes I will pass that advice on . She hasn't started viewing yet but she's got a list of ones she likes the look of then is hoping to take someone confident and experienced along for help and advice .

Shouldn't have looked at that FPS sales list! Reminded me of all the fabulous fun I had on our ponies! And there is a lovely one who looks just right and is a gelding and just down the road and is affordable and we have a spare stable! *sits on hands* Not enough time to do him justice and current horse would Be Very Put Out! Not fair . . . :(

I like him :-)

I would have put him at older than 4 though. In terms of his way of going that is.

Yes I remember now he was a bit of a job to keep moving but considering his age he did superbly well. All credit to his owner. Didn't realise that he is just up the road from me.

I can't actually decide what the last pic is actually OF!

Bizarre what folk chose for pics isn't it. The first one is nice, the rest are really not flattering and make him look like a beach donkey. Jumping one the rider is hanging on with the reins.

Cracking little ponies.

I have also just had a sneaky look at the dales society website and there are some tempting beasties on there too...

Yes, if they hadn't gotten lucky with that first photo I would probably have passed him over... definitely luck rather than judgement!

Totally agree. The sole sale pic for my colour mare in sig was horrendous as well. I only went to see her as I was passing anyway. She didn't look anything like the pic (other than markings obviously since it was her lol).

I think he's overpriced for what he has done/seen of the world.

A friend has had 2 dales and now has 2 fells- one is a bolshy difficult ****** but the mare is a sweety.

Awww... fate there then, Ffionwinnie.

I actually struggle to take decent pictures of my pony. He's pretty in the flesh but not very photogenic for some reason. At least I know the difference between the good pictures and the bad though and I know which to share and which to burn :-)

I've ridden a Dales before and currently driving a Dales x cob, they are lovely ponies to look after and handle. Can't comment on Fells, but I can recommend a Dales.
